I have about $40-45k to spend on red, but i need some advise on the best way to go forward. My questions are;

1: Do I buy the red one now, since I have in mind of getting the epic-x

2: If I decide to get a Red One, what accessories do i need to get me started. If you can recommend any thing outside Red, please include model type.

3: I need to know if these accessories which I already have will work well with the red one one epic-x ( Carl Zeiss ZF 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, Red rock V2 follow focus, red rock matte box, ND filters from red rock.)

Thanks

This will help you a lot:

Ok now that the plug is out of the way. I can try to help you out.

The RED is lego set. Every person here would tell you different things you need for the camera. At $40-$45K you are looking at around $25K in accessories. There are some "Basic Accessories" you will need (Covered in DVD!) I.E. Viewfinder, LCD, Media, Rods, etc. So that will knock off about $10k (Rough estimates here).

There's hundreds of details here.. But if it were me, I'd start with basics, and work your way up from there.. You do NOT need to buy it all at once. Get the basics and move forward.

If you shoot a lot buy: BUY
If you shoot once in a while: RENT
You don't have enough money to shoot professionally. Way too many things to buy.
"Scarlet is on the horizon" SWEET.

David is right, but the last line "Scarlet is on the horizon" should make no difference to his first three lines.

There is a lot more to shooting than just the camera itself. If Scarlet sells for $5,000.00 then that's around $12,000 less than the RED. Nice... But in the world of accessories, you will still find this amount goes away pretty damn fast.

If you want a RED, get a RED.. I have no doubt Jim will make the RED Owners happy they have REDs when it comes time to buy their Epic's. Just take your time.

If you definitely want Epic-X in the future, I'd buy REDONE now, atleast just the body, so you can lock in the trade-in value. Who knows what Oct. 30th will bring...

Thanks for all the replies. Yousuf, I intend to get the Epic, I know I cant just use the body to shoot while i wait for the epic-x. So, what basic accessories can i get to use the red one now, without spend much and reselling them when the epic drops. Please consider my post that i got the lense set , follow focus, matte box already. I guess what I am trying to say is that , I don't wanna buy a lot of accessories that i will later sell when the epic comes out.

Lonzo, you can use all current accessories from the RED One to the EPIC and Scarlet lines.

For the trade up from RedOne to EpicX. I was told all the cables will still work. From what I see in the EPICX photos, the battery's, datastorage, and evf are designed differently. But they still will work.

(but i put an order in for another RedOne, but only bought the body and cf flash card). - i hope the cf flash card is part of that EpicX trade up as well.

if you already have mattebox, follow focus, and lenses, then all you really need is the support system, monitor, cf module, and bricks/charger.

for support system, you can buy red's production pack for pretty cheap, just under $1300 (you'll also need an extra top mount and a pair of top 12" rods, which you can buy cheaply off-hand). note that this is a 19mm setup.

for monitor, i suggest get a used 5.6" red lcd ... i've seen several for sale in the classifieds section of this forum for around $1000-1200. you could also consider cheaper alternatives like smallhd (i've not used this).

cf module should be purchased new with the body, it's like $500 extra no big deal.

as for power supply, get the red powerpack for under $1500 new.

i think that's really all you need to get up and running, for under $4500 total. not too bad.

My questions my be a bit much for a new posting, but I am basically trying to secure a place in line for the Epic-X by buying the REDONE now, so I wanna do it the cheapest way possible. At the same time, i wanna be apple to start shooting with the RED incase the Epic delay is longer than i expect.

That being said, can you guys please help me out with these questions below:

For My Zeiss lenses, will i need the nikon mount

Also, since i intend getting the Epic, do you think its necessary to get the REDONE EVF now or wait.

Are they coming out new CF cards like 32GB or should i just take advantage of the 4 pack deal now. Alternatively, can you recommend any cheaper third party CF cards one can buy.

Yes, you need the Nikon mount, which will add $500. You will find a few second hand, but only save $100 or so... You can't get it instead of the P/L, but you wouldn't want to. You should always have the P/L mount handy as you never know when you will need to put it on. Only takes 10 minutes or so and is pretty easy to do.

I use the Nikon mount with the ZFs and it's an absolute joy! They really pop compared to normal Nikons and work well. You may consider getting them "cinivised" by Duclos to declick, add gears and a new front, but they are wonderful lenses. I love mine.

The 4-pack of 16GB will serve you well. Of course they will be faster and cheaper in the future but the 16GB will always be useful.
