  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4 x 128 gb SSD PACK.... please?

Still feels like we're paying WAY over the odds for RED's SSD media....I think this is a marketing and pr mistake on RED's part. Much of the criticism of Scarlet for examples comes not from the cost of the camera BUT from the realistic actual cost of assembling a production ready rig. I know a lot of guys here who are getting ready to jump onboard with Canon's C300 as it come virtually ready to rock and the media costs are negligible.

If you take typical SSD prices of circa $400 retail for 256 GB media then compare this with RED's $3200 then this is a scary markup and reflects negatively IMHO.

A sony 1tb card is 10k so its pretty propotioned id say...not thrilled to have to drop it but i dont feel like im being taken over the coals

In fairness to Sony, their 1TB card supports (much?) higher data rates than RED's does, so the cost is more than justified, whereas I do get the sense that RED media is currently overpriced. But the camera is cheaper, so...sort of a wash I guess.

Oh, and thumbs up for a 4x128 value pack. I've basically avoided purchasing media precisely because the pricing is so messed up right now. :(

I like Sony's approach of diferent certified media. Some certified for 4k+ uncompressed RAW (most expensive) others for 1080 compressed (least expensive)

Such an approach would have come in handy for the scarlet crowd, as their camara is already bandwith limited and really is not in need of Epic-type bandwiths...

I asked that to Jim point-blank at the Nov Scarlet event and the answer was "no". Perhaps they'll change their mind...

I think it will be a mess with different media for different datarates. Anyhow, the Red SSD's are overpriced, but not by as much as perhaps most people think, I suspect that the SSD components are of a very high quality (intel high quality SSDs are very expensive), and the enclosures are probably not for free... but maybe they are about 25% overpriced, compared to the prices on other Red products...?

"Why RED media costs more than the average media" has been discussed time and time again, but I'll still give my 2 cent's worth...

We're at the stage now where "off the shelf" media is more than capable of handling the data rate requirements of the latest and greatest cameras out there. My point simply is that we all know that manufacturers and this includes RED are making massive profits by forcing customers down a "proprietary" media route.

Feels wrong to me that companies are charging 500%+ markups on media and I'd rather RED charged more for the camera and less for media.

It sounds like you are making an accusation that RED is treating their customers unjustly. If so, that's no skin off my nose. However, they are strong words which I would hope you have all of the facts to base your assumption that it is indeed so simple to use the "off the shelf media.

Is every piece of off the shelf media so rugged that the drives may be insterted/ejected /re-inserted into the camera/REDstation as many times as the RED SSD's are Can every one of those "off the shelf" SSD's maintain such a high read/write speed which will never cause a chance of dropping frames?

Not all media is equal, and RED cannot afford massive headaches for both the end user as well as RED tech support because they bought a cheap and unreliable drive.

Yes, we all know RED is making a profit by providing REDmags for recording media (and hopefully they are doing so on every other product they bring to the market). They also insure that we have confidence that we won't run into problems on set because of a deficiency in the recording media performance. I'm curious how you figured that the 128GB REDmags have a value of $360/each.

The logic on having a much more expensive camera with cheaper media doesn't make too much sense to me either because to me it seems to reason that with such a cheaper camera system, filmmakers may afford to get a camera and one or two REDmags...and build onto their packages as they begin bringing in a return. Your suggestion of making a more expensive camera to begin with would mean the potential of locking someone out from buying into the system.

As one who is benefiting by a product like the RED Camera, I want the company to make profits. It ensures that I will continue benefiting from future products they will have to offer.

I'm not making accusations here and I certainly want RED to make a good profit as I'm sure they are. RED have been incredibly generous with their upgrade policies so I'm not attacking in any way, just suggesting that the media pricing feels out of kilter to me and I'm sure there are lots of Scarlet users in particular who are feeling the pain when it comes to purchasing media. Red don't manufacture SSD's so they are buying direct from the manufacturers like everyone else and even adding a hard core housing, the costs still feel disproportionately high.
