  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4 New OLPF's for Dragon!

Hello John,

Is there a way to preorder your filters?

I would love to have 1X LLO Zero and 1X LLO low-con filter.

Thanks

Pat

PS: How about a group buy?

Phil hopefully you make one of those PDF chats for us that dont know what exactly every low hi con blof spt fjdgi sadgjasodgh means and makes in reality :D

Have to provide my standard RED disclaimer here since tech support is already getting calls and emails asking if we have a new firmware for camera and new REDCINE-X PRO version to account for John's OLPFs :001_unsure:

Yes, we have provided empty OLPF trays for John to experiment with and sell his own flavors of OLPF. Knowing how smart he and his team is, we figured he could do some interesting things.

That being said, the trays we provided are RED parts and they, in themselves, are within factory spec and do not affect warranty status. However, that is where the line ends. We are not providing John with any materials (or even guidance) on the actual OLPF materials / recipes. These are not supported within RED firmware or software or by RED tech support. This is a non-OEM solution. If anything done with these solutions damage your camera in any way, it would not be covered.

Hopefully, that helps with some clarity.

Thanks Brent. Everyone do please pay attention to this - my site does have a big list of caveats and provisos for the use of these filters. They are strictly third party devices, and the making of images with them; good, bad or indifferent, is entirely your own business. ;)

Yes John can we preorder?

This is all quite fantastic. And we are in good hands with John.

Question for Brent - if a trusted 3rd-party is producing these, does this take them off RED's plate, as far as developing similar types of interchangeable OLPFs? or will RED be proceeding according to the original plan?

did I say this is great? this is great! 1 Dragon = 6 cameras. And climbing....

...now I'll be hitting the refresh button on kippertie - when will orders open??

Great work! Is it possible/logical to build a OLPF with the traits of the STH or LLO with a 0.9 or even 1.2 ND "built in"? That seems like a nice way to minimize filters/layers in the optical path. (Only if you knew you were shooting outdoors all day of course.)

Hi John,

These little guys are fantastic.

Keen to see the extra Lowlight & sharpness qualities of the zero lowpass OLPF. Is this almost completely clear? Eager to see how much this is going to help super slowmo at lower res's.

Great stuff.

Hehe, I come on here to post something and you're all ahead of me ;)

We have four OLPFs designed currently - one is shipping right now, three more are on the way on a sensible timescale.
All of these are approved by RED, use genuine RED parts and present no warranty issues.

They are described in reasonable detail on our store at http://www.kippertie.com

The Full Spectrum and IR versions have some example images and I'll be populating the store with more as I get a chance. Both of these are false colour filters, so they're mostly for the mad scientists and experimenters... but we've tried to keep the price low enough that you can have fun with them without breaking the bank.

Coming shortly we have our take on a Low-con option in LLO and STH variations. These are under testing and revision right now, but we wanted to let everyone that they're much more than a concept at this point, as a low-con OLPF is a much sought after piece of the Dragon puzzle.

I'll share images when appropriate in the near future and I know Phil is keen to do one of his great side-by-sides for me.

We have more stuff in the works too, which we are also really excited about... not just filtration but 'more' for that space behind the lens ;)

How low con is it?

1/8? 1/4? Which low con would you compare it to?

We're aiming to match 1/8 Lowcon... but it'll be a thing in its own right with its own character. Examples will follow, and if I can't decide I may even subdivide some variations.

You have a customer already. Sounds great, and might take the edge off that slightly sterile look the regular low light filter has. Can't wait.

Are you actually using the red LLO and then customising it, or is it a complete reinvention of your own?

EDIT: Basically if you make it close to an HBM I would be ecstatic!

We're not using any Red optical parts. Re-engineering them means starting form the ground up, and we've not used any Red proprietary data to do that, just regular metrology at the optical lab we work with to find good matches from stock coatings and materials. The diffusion repurposes some openly purchasable tech from established industry names.

John - were the IR samples posted on the kippertie.com store shot with a regular Dragon camera using the IR olpf? were any of them shot on the monochrome sensor? or were they shot with your experimental Dragon with the olpf removed? I'm just curious about whether the camera of origin for all of the sample shots is the same...I know you have been experimenting with IR and RED cams for awhile.

There are various sources on the examples, mostly monochrome, but one good sharpness example on colour Dragon. All with approximately the same formulation of OLPF. Most of the development has been to get rid of problems, rather than change the potential aesthetic... so these are all fair reflections of results, albeit some were earlier configs.

I will be adding some more self explanatory and consistent examples soon - bear in mind that my final configuration rolled in only days ago, and I want to setup proper example material:)

The cloudscape is Monochrome MX IR,
The bug is Dragon Monochrome IR
The LA cityscape is colour Dragon in IR
The big oak tree is Mono MX with super heavy ND and Pola
The singer is Mono MX with IR pass OLPF and tungsten light

Question for Brent - if a trusted 3rd-party is producing these, does this take them off RED's plate, as far as developing similar types of interchangeable OLPFs? or will RED be proceeding according to the original plan??

Meryem, this is completely independent of any RED OLPF development. Our plan of record is intact.

copy that. Thanks, Brent. I'll try to restrain myself from buying one of everything John releases while I see what the RED chefs are cooking. :eek6:

I've got some good IR filters from a previous experiment but will have to pick up some colors once I figure out what my go-to lens of choice will be, John. I think my best options are the Sigma 18-35 (EF), RED 18-50 (PL, mine is quite a good copy and not a bad macro), and Tokina 11-16mm (PL).

It seems like they may all handle the spectrum in their own way and that some trial and error is in order.

I'm looking forward to this - I haven't had much time or opportunity for mad scientist experiments lately. I'm psyched to shoot some wintry landscapes.
