  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Strange question. Which ever size, have more than one!

Production will probably prefer fewer larger drives for cost reasons, but from an "all eggs in one basket" perspective, more drives of lower capacity would be preferred. Also, more drives take up more physical room, which can be an issue in a small office!

Personally I'd go at least dual 3TB or 4TB, and steer clear of the new technology 5TB until it's been out and proven longer.

I've had some issues with the larger disks... especially early in their production cycle. These disks are soo huge that even very low fault rates can yield faults on them. It generally isn't a big problem for consumer use... but in RAID applications it can cause grief. When the 2TB drives first came out I built an 8 drive array using them... 2 failed during the initial build (note that they worked fine as single drives), then I had a drive failure rate of a couple per year. Personally... if the project has the money I always buy Enterprise rated drives... and they tend not to be available in the highest capacities right away. They also cost a bit more (not as bad as it used to be), but the headache reduction is worth it.

Now you need to backup 1.7TB footages, but the current single hard disk(backup) just has 900GB free。you aslo had many unused 3TB single hard disks。

it could be happen that one part of certain take is stored into the first disk, another part is stored into the second disk,it is hard to manage the RAW footages(for example, the .ari files)

Is Using a single disk to backup these footages a good idea ?

4TB is the capacity where reliability and price are locked in. It's proven tech by this point and the drives have been around for several years, so the problems have been worked out by now. I would not recommend anything higher than that at this time.
