  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3rd Party Mounts - Warning

We just agreed to a rough arrangement, we need to make sure technically things are in order and finalize the agreement. I am pretty sure that will not happen next week.. but RED and BIRGER will let you guys know as soon as everyone signs off and all systems are go.

Why can't you just void any warranty repairs caused by improper Birger mount installation? Seems like a "no-brainer."

Of course, I'm not a lawyer.

My understanding is as follows: The I - cable that becomes exposed when the bottom red mount plate is removed. If this cable is pinched and shorted when installing the Birger mount electrical damage can occur. As a solution to this Red is suggesting that Birger do the install. This of course adds to our cost by shipping and Birger's labor. OK, not that big of a deal, but ... Also, this would imply that once the EF mount is installed that only Birger could swap it back to the PL without voiding our warranty. This is not a workable situation for those who need more lens choice flexibility such as to shoot indies for ourselves and rent to PL lens users on the side. It effectively will make the camera an EF mount only camera until the warranty expires. And even when the warranty expires and some of us start to swap it back and forth on our own, there is still the possibility of shorting this cable.

So, my question to Red is:

Can we pay you to modify the camera so that the I - Cable is more robust and difficult to pinch when changing the mount. This would make it possible for us to go back to the original plan of being able to swap back and forth the mounts on our own depending on the requirements of our work while still maintaining our camera warranty. This would be an elective factory modification designed for the Birger mount. Perhaps the same mod would also apply to the P&S. I don't know what you would have to charge but my guess would be between $175 and $375. I think the vast majority of us would gladly pay this to realize the original plan.

For me, if Red can't do this, then I think the Birger will stay on my camera until the warranty expires and then I will explore modifying the cable myself to reduce the risks of shorting when changing mounts.

Is there some sort of non-caustic tape that could be used to flatten the i-data cable so that it isn't a nuisance during the mount swap?

Looking forward to the announcement. Have put up the cash
have scheduled the use. have made rental agreement on the set of EOS lenses. Have believed Eric would deliver when he said. Have been delayed!!! NOT by Eric. Ask for all possible effort not to delay us any more than necessary. I can get immediate delivery. Will this void my warranty?

I'm also a little concerned about standard accessories. like 14/2 V lithium ion batts. NEver had Sony tell me I would void my warranty if I didn't use Sony Batts.... This all needs a lot of further clarification!

You think RED should design around a third party mount? You don't know the problem but you already have a fix and a cost for the fix? Why stop there? Tell people what the turn around times are as well...

Rumors fly around here, in a few days someone is going to think something you said is true.

It remains to be seen if one could mount the IMS on the Red, then the Birger to the IMS.

If this ends up being a reality, one could potentially send their camera to Red to have the IMS permanently installed... then one could presumably swap between the Birger Mount, PL, Leica... anything!

If it does not become a reality on the Red One, or is not mechanically or techinically feasible, it would be great to see this incorporated into the Epic.

I made a quick Photoshop mock up of how it might work. Spacing the sensor out like that would allow enough room for the Red backfocus collar, the IMS, and the Birger.

I'm not an engineer, so I'm sure there are difficulties I'm not considering.

At any rate, thank you Red for listening.

In case it didn't come through in my last post...

Thank you, Red. For everything!

What if the cable had its own dedicated socket at the base of the mount receptacle where it could be plugged in or out as needed? So it would become a "user replaceable part" depending on which mount is used?

Only an I-Tech protocol compatible PL lens user would need to plug it in for proper installation when needed.

No? Maybe?

I remember the i/ interface was disabled in one of the builds for some time, left in inactive state because of some electrical problems when installing lenses that support i/ and have connectors for it on the lenses. If it is correct what I remember then i/ interface could be optionally disabled in to the 0V state if possible in the future firmware update as a menu option.

If not possible then paying 2X$100 for shipment by 200 initial Birger mount owners is $40,000
Well, this increases cost of Birger mount by $200 that could be used as a insurance fund instead of shipping. If someone will screw up installation (except putting screwdriver in to the Mysterium) and blew up i/ interface connected card, then this fund will pay for repair.

Basically for $200 extra you get the insurance if you break camera while installing the mount.

So the whole issue is worth $200, basically.
