3rd Party Mounts - Warning

Hi,

You could just put the PL mount on & send the camera back.

The advantage of buying a second hand camera is you don't have to worry about such things!

Stephen

Not sure what you are implying here, Stephen.

Stephen... I am quite sure you are not encouraging our customers to try to trick us with a warranty problem... it just sounds like it.

We are on our customer's side. We are trying to make sure that 3rd party accessories don't cause problems for our customers or us. But your statement seems a bit reckless. Maybe you can explain?

Jim

We are on our customer's side.

Thanks Jim. Thinking more precisely, this has been your attitude from day one and is one of those things what makes a big difference. My concern was that whether you had observed the need (of the critical part) some of us have.

Thor already mentioned Epic, and I've also been wondering on my own whether Epic will allow adapters for 3rd party lenses. Another question is, would it be technically possible to design the camera to support the auto focus modes of EF and/or Nikon lenses? Or, could Red lenses have autofocus in the future?

I'm not thinking that much of an auto focus that followed a moving object. Instead, it would be already helpful -as it speeds up operation in quick situations- if one could automatically focus the camera to some point before pushing rec. Compare, this new feature in the latest build that the video is already there in the LCD before one is able to rec, is very very handy. While waiting the camera to boot up one may now focus and frame and then get immediately in action once the camera is booted up. Saves easily another 10-20secons. One of those small but still great improvements.

Hi Jim,

Seems like common sense to me to remove any 3rd party additions. If you replaced rather than repaired my camera I would loose my extras!

As I am often a rather long from any authorised repair centres for equipment, I have in the past had to make emergency repairs in the field. No manufacture or rental house ever complained most are happy to offer phone support when in the field, I have modified circuit boards on Sony cameras with the soldering iron connected to the generator.

If I had a camera that where the lens mount was not parralell to the sensor I would have to fix it myself & quickly, the concept of the original mount was not all bad.

My Best

Stephen

PS Now I understand your Email!

We can tell when the PL has been removed...

Hi Jarred,

Out if curiosity did any of the original 100 camera owners open up their cameras to see if there was a manufacuures name on the Chip:)

Stephen

Okay, let me understand this. If this happened with my camera the whole thing goes down like this?

A: Sorry, guy, you voided the warranty with your funny mount.
<=o

B: Sorry, friend, how much will it cost to fix it?
=S

A: Not much, buddy, just ###.##.
=/

B: Okay, guy, that sounds fair.
=D

A: That's right, friend, just be more careful next time!
S=D

B: Thanks, buddy, I certainly will!
=)

Or does it go down like this?

A: Sorry, guy, you voided the warranty with your funny mount.
<=o

B: Sorry, friend, how much will it cost to fix it?
=S

A: Nothing, buddy, it's done for.
S=o

B: But I thought you were my guy, friend.
=o

A: Hey, I'm not your friend, buddy!
S=0

B: Then I'm not your buddy, guy!
>=0

A: I'm not your guy, friend!
>=0

B: I'm not your friend, buddy!
>X0

etc.

I would hope for the former than the latter.

But seriously, I'm hoping for the P+S IMS mount. I plan on using a mix of PL and Nikon lenses and it would be a REAL pain to have to swap mounts during a shoot.

We just had a good meeting with Birger... We have worked out a solution to possibly move forward without voiding the camera warranty, more details to come soon.

If they did, they would see the name of the manufacturer... RED Digital Cinema. I'm not sure why you continue to believe that we bought this sensor from IBM (or whoever)...

Very glad to hear. This should calm some waters :) Threat level is down from Red to amber.

Do these details - by any chance - include the option to have the Birger/P+S installed at Red?

Outstanding...looking forward to hearing more about the solution.

I really need to shoot some 4.5K video of the moon at 800mm and this is the way to do it.

Hi Jim,

I have never for one moment thought you bought the chip from a third party. I was curious if you fabricated it in house, you have since told me elsewhere that you did not.

My best.

Stephen

Birger
can you give us more info than this? Will it be at least a month, 2 months? You should be able to tell us the mount definitely isn't shipping by next week.

We just agreed to a rough arrangement, we need to make sure technically things are in order and finalize the agreement. I am pretty sure that will not happen next week.. but RED and BIRGER will let you guys know as soon as everyone signs off and all systems are go.
