Hello,

I've used the Blackmagic URSA EVF with the Woddencamera modification and loved it but after having 2 breaking down in less than 2 years, and Blackmagic doesn't offer any out of warranty repair for that model, I'm looking at another brand.

As all features I need are quite on par today (peaking, 1x1 magnification,...), the most important for me is the immersive feel and magnification of the optical path. I'm used to pull focus myself on docu and on fiction. So I was wondering if the Gratical eye has the same field of view as the Blackmagic's one?

Any inputs comparing both EVFs would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Patrick

PS: Does the new DSMC2 EVF have a better field of view as the DSMC1 Bomb EVF?

Can't speak too in depth about all the above but I was searching for an EVF and ended up with first a Bomb LCOS, then a Bomb OLED which I use now. I just liked staying with Red on this accessory and only running one cable for both power and signal (without losing an SDI signal from my expander). I couldn't justify the DSMC2 EVF from a cost perspective, but if you can then definitely give it a test. It's really gorgeous and fits the entire UI with a 16x9 image and no black bars (which is mostly what I shoot). The FOV on the DSMC2 EVF is definitely better than on the BOMB EVFs. It's a small difference (I don't feel like the Bomb is lacking too much), but it is noticeable.

I tested the Gratical Eye and that is also great, but I couldn't rely on it being an end-of-chain monitoring device if I'm using it for framing.

The Gratical Eye remains the standout of the 3rd party EVFs in my opinion (I use mine with Reds, Arris and Sonys in lieu of the manufacturers units) - the ability to view your image with a LUT applied whilst monitoring waveforms and false based on the underlying log signals is a godsend.

Basically the monitoring features beat everything else out there from every other manufacture, the only things it's still lacking are the promised update from 1D LUTs to 3D LUTs, and opaque mattes for framing (as an alternative to frame lines).

The big thing to look out for with the Eye is the combination power/SDI that Zacuto sell for it. I've had three of them have their SDI cables die. The power cables are sound, but whatever they're using for the SDIs is rubbish - go with separate, reliable cabling (and always carry spares to be safe).

Thanks Brendan for you reply,

I went the BM EVF way because the bomb had to small picture. So if DSMC2 has the same field of view I won't go that route. But I should try one one day.
On Weapon I usually don't need Lut, waveform or any tool that is not peaking and magnify. I juge the exposure of the image on the light post and histogram.

Hello Mark,

Could you just give me a hint how the EYE compairs to the BM EVF? Specially field of view wise.

Thanks all

Pat
