A couple of users on this forum have mentioned the fact some Super 16mm film lenses may not "resolve" the 3K sensor of the 2/3" Scarlet. Can anyone explain or verify if this? I think that the use of Super 16mm lenses without crop will become very popular with Scarlet users. There are a lot of these Super 16 lenses out there from Zeiss, Cooke and Angeneiux and we should be able to rent them for cheap considering that Super 16 is on the way out. Having high quality lenses will be essential and still and s35 lenses will be out due to the massive crop. Is this a matter of dated optics?

The miniprimes are a good alternative but that still leaves us without a quality PL mount zoom lens for the Scarlet 2/3, hence turning to Super16 zoom lenses.

sorry, no harm meant, just figured that it was relevant in more than one thread.

I think you might be confusing the meaning of resolve and cover.

No, I know that super 16 lenses will cover the Scarlet 2/3 sensor but some are stating that some of these lenses may not "resolve", basically, the sensor resolution being too high for the lens. This should not be an issue, considering the fact that the optics of these lenses are of very high quality. I think the concern may be over some of the older coatings or glass types but I am not sure.

Technically, if the lens were to not resolve, wouldn't that just result in a slightly softer image? Many want a softer image anyways.

Well, what you heard is true but who says your lens needs to have resolving power that matches the resolving power of your sensor. I shot for months using a lens with a lower resolving power than my sensor had. Although a little soft, the shots looked great. The lens was all I could afford at the time.

However, given a choice, a would have much rather used a lens that could produce sharper images with better color reproduction, contrast, etc.

If the super 16 lens has a look that is pleasing to you or your clients, I say go for it.

I shot a lot of stuff on my Red using S16 zeiss lenses.
Most of the stuff were shot in 3K/2K 60/120fps scaled to 1080p and it looked great.
Very sharp contrasty, and lovely.
I liked them to the point I bought the set.
The whole set will not cover fully 3k on the Red, but it should on the Scarlet; when it's out of course:)

The same discussion was on when the F-900 came out. According to Panavision not even the most expensive HD Primo lenses could resolve the 1080 lines of the HD-sensor.
But Sony had some serious digital sharpening in their cameras.
I assume no lens could resolve 3K in 2/3".

But so what? If you need the resolution shoot 35mm.
