  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Are there samples around of Scarlet 3K HDR? How is the quality at 3K? I might need to do this for an upcoming shoot that will have dark skin on a beach in bright sunlight.

3k Scales up to 4k really well. We delivered a few projects a couple weeks ago in 4k all our slowmo looked great when scaled up to 4k and sharpened

That's great news. What is the strategy? Do you expose your A track for the darker areas of the frame, measure how many stops your highlights are away from that and set the HDR accordingly?

Yeah, that's about right (expose for A-track -- make the shadows bright enough -- and then capture as many stops over that on the X-track that the motion will allow).

Just remember that at +3 and above, you really start to notice the motion difference between the two tracks. Honestly, with bounce/fill it shouldn't be too much of an issue capturing +2 and then using that to have a smoother/softer roll-off into clip. Realistically, it'll look weird (mapped) if you try to maximize all the DR into a rec709 space.

How does motion enter into it?

I noticed that when I read the manual and wondered about it. For a moment I thought perhaps the A track's slower speed would disguise the X track's faster speed but you appear to be saying it doesn't at the extremes?

3K is pretty solid.
2K is usable.
1K is a flip camera. ;)

Don't forget, that using more than +4 (+3 to be safe) stops in HDR leaves you with a "gap" in between track A and track X that looks quite ugly when you're mixing the two tracks togethers. AFAIK, it happens due to the fact that on track A you have your highlights blown, while on track X you get to a point when your A-track mids are already underexposed which leaves you with noisy data in between those tracks (if my explanation makes any sense).
