Oh and one more scary thing with pricing are the accesories to make the current RED work - $180 for a cable to connect the EVF! - - OMG, $180 just for a cable. then there are the prices for small pieces of metal that make handles, mounts, cradles etc. All hugely expensive! I find it hard to understand how something so seemingly simple and solid could cost nearly as much as something so technically advanced and complicated as the cameras themselves. But then I haven't lived in this film world.

I would imagine that one of the causes for higher-than-expected (for some people) prices is economy of scale and the lack thereof. If a company makes 100,000 widgets, the price per widget can be kept pretty low, as the development and tooling costs can be spread across more units. The cost to engineer the product and make tooling is the same for 100,000 as it would be for 500.

What RED manufactures isn't intended to be made in huge production runs, as the market for these kinds of products is fairly limited. That means the development and tooling costs have to be spread over a much smaller number of units for sale. Even the 2/3" fixed-lens Scarlet is going to have a very limited pool of potential customers. How many average consumers out there really care if they shoot at 3K, and how many are going to have the computing power to edit that kind of footage?

Sure, high prices for accessories sucks, but it's a fact of life. I can stand the heat, so I'm staying in the kitchen. :tongue_smilie:

Great my post just failed.

2/3rd lens can be put on a windowed s35/4/3rd sensor. They can save money by eliminating the 2/3rd line. A same or slightly cheaper s35/4/3rd sensor with cheap fully auto manual lens option is possible with a fixed version at the present fixed price. This would offer a good alternative to all Canon still and video cameras. The FF versions simply offer more than what the Canon is giving.

We need 4K+ stills, but if video and high frame rates are less than 3K, and pixel binned at 4:4:4, that is fine However, the time where 4K prosumer video is desirable is fast approaching.

At higher economies of scale, a 4/3rd sensor does not make much of a difference. The film industry has perception distorting exaggerated pricing because of small production runs.

It is probably too late, and I suspect we will see something shortly. I suspect that the 2/3rd inch will surprise us and come packaged highly desirably.

The less I pay for the fixed lens the better. This definitely seems like a straight forward company (which is rare on planet earth) but still don't get the price hiked up for the rest of us who can't pay more.

In fact I think anyone volunteering to pay more should do so, Red can pass the savings on to the rest of us.
