  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3D Stereoscopic Film with HVX200 ?

At SPIEE stereo group last year (san jose) Real D seemed very proud of their Ghost busting.

Regardless of how proud they are or are not... I think it looks awful.

But, I know a lot of people who think it's great. My eyes are certainly more attuned to stereo faults than the general public. And Real-D and ghostbusting is all about the general public.

Well yes, but all monitors and projectors flicker, eh? There is always a refresh rate. Even film projectors have a gate. :)

The Hyundai is a triple flash 120Hz progressive display with a line alternating passive circular polarizing filter embedded onto the front of the LCD.

O.K. I found the specs on the Hyundai. Really nice product.

So it uses horizontal interlace so you get 600 lines in 3d vertically. Many years ago we had some colleges that were too cheap to run their $300k photogrammetric software on decent graphics hardware and were using horizontal interlaced techniques on CRT+shutter glasses. Back then it made every thing look like a “winky-dink” that you might get as free prize in a Cornflakes packet.

Without sounding like a total snob, does the 600 lines make every thing look a bit chunky in the vertical dimension or does it smooth out a bit? I.e. does it look like and auto stereoscopic display turned sideways in terms of linear artifacts and half res in one dimension? (The color and contrast seem to look nice from photos on the web).

Yes I hear you.

My (late) father used to be a production designer in the film business, and often he would refer somewhat derisively to the public as the “popcorn eaters”; usually prefaced by “what the hell difference does it make, the pop corn eaters can’t tell the difference!”.

Twelve years ago I did some VR presentations in LA at what used to be the Getty Conservation Institute with an Italian company called Info Byte. We were using an SGI ONYX Reality engine, Barco CRT projectors, and 25 pairs of crystal eyes for a simulation of Nefertari’s tomb (in Egypt). We showed it to over six hundred people in organized groups over a period of week. However I found that of the people that knew me that about 1 to 2% of them had really bad head aches the next day, or didn’t feel right. That really left an impression on me, (as these people seemed genuinely messed up the next day); so today all the stereo that we do (our company/group) we really try put the extra effort to make sure it is visually very rich in terms of 3d texture but safe on the eyes, otherwise what's the point in doing stereo?

My fear is that unless some real efforts are made on behalf of the “popcorn eaters” to provide engaging and very safe and well executed stereo that the public will get bored with stereo 3d and would rather watch the mono version of the show without the usual psycho visual torture that normally accompanies feature length stereo presentations.

I’m away for the next ten days or so (digitally un-contactable), so if you don’t see any more self centered long winded posts (from me) its not that I’m being anti-social I’m just not here or on line. {Possibly a huge relief to anyone sick enough to read this thread}.

Many thanks to Benni, Luki, and Istvan for your cool posts.

Perhaps we should set up a more generalized stereo 3d thread to see who else is into this stuff, or wants to, or is doing serious work and with RED ONEs and stereo.

Cheers

Eric.

hello,

I want to bring the topic on top again.

I read very very much last two weeks about stereo films and I feel very like floating around in a bunch of half knowledge.

I found out to "sync" two hvx via firewire, discussed here: http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/sync/

My issues now are
1. questions about controlling focus/iris and zoom of the cams in sync.

I wonder if there is a possibily to split up the signal of e.g. a varizoom to controll both cameras insync ? has anyone tried that before ?

2. real-time 3d monitoring on location while shooting
My ambition would be to have real time monitoring with an autostereoscopic display (without glasses), but companies, I wrote to, doesnt know or doesnt want to know something about that.

I am aware of the possibility to get monitoring with two rectangular arranged displays and polariesed glasses, but I doesnt consider that to be a cheap and simple solution.

What is about the possibility to use shutter glasses ? does anyone know something about that ?
will I need two computers for the two cameras ? but how do I get the signal together to one monitor and the glasses ?
or would I need only one computer ? but how do I get two camera signals to one computer ?

question upon question, I know ...

thank you for any idea ...

"Recently, we have been doing work with the Hyundai stereo monitor, which has a line polarizing filter applied to the front of the glass"

We've agree with Lucas and have found the Hyundai displays to be very good too and there are a number of other TVs about to come on the market.

On the other discussion about U23D there was a device used called a SIP2100 which is built by 3ality which helps analyse and correct stereo3d images. There is a SIP200 white paper here http://www.quantel.com/list.php?a=Library&as=White_Papers
