  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm producing & post supe-ing a project destined for 3d exhibition. We'll shoot Red (most likely), and I'd love to hear any tips, anecdotes, recommendations, etc... from those that have shot 3d with red.

I'm primarily interested in what kinds of rigs are out there, who's had success with which one, etc..., so this thread is really aimed at those that have first hand experience with Red and 3d stereo rigs & acquisition

thanks,

jt

Give Max or Tim a shout at Paradisefx.com. They have lotsa time under the belt shooting 3D and have developed a rig to use the RED cameras on. Also I believe Steve Gibby of Gibcor has had hands on with this rig. Look under the search engine on this site.

Hey John,

Give me a call tomorrow and we'll have a long chat about 3D... : )

Yea, paradise have this shit down John. But I'd love to build you a rig if you have the RnD coin. :greedy:

What approach would you take? I looked different rigs and most of them are too heavy IMO.

P+S Technik from Munich is working currently on a nice beam-splitter rig which should, once ready, go under 7 kg weight! Expected delivery should be summer and the cost between 15 and 20.000.- (gosh, I don't remember if they said Euro or Dollars, SORRY!) they showed a prototype at NAB.

Meanwhile I build myself a simple unit, also to study the problems better.

Lucas, I never understood how far your sw assists stereoscopic editing. May I do some questions? Does it do:
- automatic keystone corrections in case of excessive convergences of the cameras
- automatic vertical parallax corrections (bad vertical alignment of the cameras)
- interactive (static and dynamic) "lens-shift" to define the virtual screen
- interactive fade-out of sx and dx frame violations
- do you have a color LUT for the different projection systems like Z-Screen, Infitec filters, or others?
- could I edit for one screen-size and the sw would calculate automatically the adequate parallaxes for different screen sizes?
- which output format do you support. I know it is a nasty question as there is no real up-to-date "standard" yet here.

I'm sorry I couldn't make those questions during NAB, but my time was too short.
Thanks Istvan

I have been doing a lot of research on 3D (I am thinking of doing my graduate research in computer vision), and I am really excited about this thread. Have you considered working with Scarlet if this production is successful?? The small body + 3k sounds like the ideal camera to shoot 3D with.

My father owns a machine shop, so I can pretty much make anything out of metal (CnC Mills, Lathes, etc.)

Let me know what you find in terms of alternate rigs.

James Cameron is making Avatar in 3D, so you might want to take a look at the Fusion 3D Camera system for ideas (if you have the ability to make a custom rig).

Here is a glimpse at the rig:

Good Luck!

HI, if you are thinking to do your graduate research in Stereoscopic technology then think about developing stereoscopic plug-ins for FCP. Probably you could quickly convert your research into money:)

Scarlet: well it is still somewhere in the far future.... and with the last delays the RED Ones are also somewhere in the unknown future...:(

Also I learned that in s-3D shooting you never really can anticipate where the sx/dx frame violation will disturb. Having more pixel information allows to shift or crap the image with much more freedom.

James Cameron is James Cameron. He has the money to make anything the way he wants, because he corrects it in post. As indie filmmaker I cannot. Specially I do not like his camera approach because you cannot bring the interocular distance lower then apparently 8-10 cm, which brings big problems for close-ups. The second thing I do not like is the idea to toe in the camera axes for convergences. In this form you get big vertical keystone deformations which will create vertical parallax problems. If you have the money to fix it in post, well it is very expensive procedure. I do prefer to have the cameras all the time parallel and decide the virtual screen interactively in post, it is much faster.

I know this thread is a bit old but I feel it needs to be updated!

The main rig I see discussed is the P+S technik 3D, but it is not fully automated rig.

What I’m looking for is a system tied in to the focus that changes the point of convergence to match, also have the same flexibility for the zoom. It would also be great to be able to program in the lenses for the shoot during testing week so it would be a matter of telling the system what lens is attached, so no adjusting would be required on set.

And if that’s not asking too much, some lenses are equipped with a 4-pin s4/I data interface, so the rig should be able to read this and then the system would not need to be set up at all!

I have found a few systems that seem to come close, has any one had any experience with these? Or can anybody recommend any. Ideally for the RED but im interested in SI-2K solutions aswell.

Here is what I have found so far;

3DVidRig Stereoscopic Filming Rig (this rig looks too light weight but it atleast semi automated)
