Hello All,

New user here. Never used a RED before, but a client is inquiring about the possibility of using Dual RED cameras on a rig, or a single RED with a Dual/Split lens setup to create polarized 3D video edited with Final Cut Pro.

Red Tech Support mentioned a user called PACE or something similar, but I could not find them here.

If you're out there Pace, please reply if you can. If I misheard them, then if anyone knows if this can be done I would appreciate any and all info.

Thanks in advance.

Talk to Tim Thomas or Max Penner at Paradise FX. They have been testing the RED camera on their 3D rigs.

Mike,

There are really only 3 companies out there right now doing consistent high-end 3D camera rig work:

ParaidiseFX - www.paradisefx.com
contact: Tim Thomas

Pace Technologies - www.pacehd.com
contact: Ryan Sheridan

3ALITY - www.3alitydigital.com
contact: Howard Postley

And mayby Steve Hines of Hineslab, if he is still around.

OH yeah, and Stereovision (think "The Sterwdreses" and "JAWS 3D")

But Max Penner of Paradise has probally the most exsperience under the belt and he is a fully qualified camera and optical technician.

I worked with pace 3d rigs in Journey To The Center Of The Earth 3D last year as the HD engineer on the second unit
I wasn't impressed with the conception it was way too flimsy we had several downtimes because of "mechanical failure" of the 3D dual camera holders

kosmos innertainment group has done many 3D films too.

kosmos innertainment group has done many 3D films too.

we shoot single camera stereoscopic and have since 1993 and our films have played in theme parks, fairs, festivals and exhibitions to million of people, so i disagree that there are only 3 companies out there. more over, our rigs are not the size of refrigerators. we have shot the top surfers in the world on 70 foot waves in 3d at mavericks, jaws and in tahiti. including oakley riders.

note the number letter combo in my name...kosmos"3D"...

here is one of our portable 3D theatres at universal and at anahiem stadium circa 1994

we purchased chris condons (stereovision) lenses and have built a BNCR lens mount for the our RED and will be shooting it soon after the recent swell dies down up north.

3D is in our serial number too...serial #0031 ("3"D with "1" camera)

Sorry Kosmos... meant no offense. I don't know everyone. : )

I've been pretty intimately involved with several multicam 3D shows over the past few years - Avatar, U23D, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Hannah Montana, etc. Those three companies are consistently the only companies that come up in RFPs and discussions as to "who should we use?"

I'm sure you do great work! Apologies.

Out of curiosity, what software do you typically use for stereo post? Are you working anaglyph, over/under, or do you have some kind of polarization viewing environment?

Cheers,

Lucas

I start to look since 2-3 months more into stereoscopic solutions, read a lot and collect questions like:
- isn't it true that in sereoscopic images there should be a sharpness which goes all the way into the deep and that shallow depth of file would be more then distracting? So is the RED camera with the PL lenses really a good choice for this? Or would a camera with a smaller sensor be better for this purpose?

Hi there:

My name is Cesar Rubio, and I am working in a "new project" (1 year already) of a 3-D rig.

You can check it out here if you want:

Regarding stereoscopic 3-D rigs for use with dual Red cameras, these are available on a custom basis through StereoScope International, which has been in the stereoscopic imaging business since 1972. Along with our associates, we have more experience in stereoscopic imaging than any one else in the industry, going back to 1953.

Other people are using very old technology, either converging type systems that introduce serious distortions that are expensive to correct, or beamsplitter (half-mirror) type systems that cause light losses of about 70%. Our new technology systems introduce no distortions, and have less than 3% light loss. Also, we have compact, light weight hand-held systems that can be used along with the Red for insert images. Systems available include normal stereo base, narrow stereo base (for macro or hypo stereo applications) and wide stereo base (for telephoto or hyper stereo applications), as well as other special purpose systems.

We may be reached at stereoscope3d@gmail.com or 818-848-9601 or 818-919-6253.

I also work with stereoscopic anaglyph film.
Based in Sweden. Havent tried with REDs but recently finished a commercial shoot with 2 HXV200.

The 3D HD U2 concert was great, see it if you can.

3ality Digital does a great job with their carbon fiber two camera rig.
They are currently using S950's, split block style and may move to the S1500
as they are entering into the world of Live transmission.

The only issue for the Red one being used for 3D may be the weight issue and lack of a "Split-block" configuration.

3D is the future of television!

hi, can anyone share what steps and items we need to shoot 3d with one red? like with a stereovision lens?
