Does anyone know if there is a editing solution that can edit in 3d with r3d files,
or do all the solutions involve a transcode?

Thanks

Speaking for my former employer - I know that SCRATCH can. When SCRATCH added the capability to support multiple RED Rocket cards a little while ago, it became possible to playback dual-stream R3D files in realtime.

Vegas Pro 10 does native R3D 3D editing remarkably well. I don't have any practical experience with it, but it does seem promising. Of course, at least a RAID0 config, or preferably, SSDs are a must for R3D 3D editing. However, Rocket is not supported, but it can handle lower preview settings just fine.

CS5.5 is supposed to step up on 3D editing as well, maybe someone can step in and provide their feedback.

Hehehe Lucas, you just can't help it, can you? ;)

Scratch is a blessing for 3D projects, we've been editing several Red projects in 3D and it's very easy to do so. You can very quickly sync the left and right eyes and there is an editing/timeline section that does the job pretty well. Then you're already there for the 3D corrections and color grading, all this in real time !

I have a post-intensive production under way at the moment. Mistika is certainly happy de-bayering, rescaling and aligning two sets of R3D files directly and in real time. Our workflow is to have all the rushes added to a Mistika timeline and do a "one hit" geometry line up with its new single click "equaleyes" stereo line up function. Then kick out the rushes as side-by-side quicktimes for the FCP editor. His EDLs then relate to the live timelines in Mistika, so when a conform is done, it picks up all the changes made to the rushes, even those done after the rushes were sent to the editor. There are a lot of stereo green screens to do. We will do them all on Mistika as well. We are also using the excellent Syntheyes camera tracker directly with Mistika where we need to match camera moves. All in all, this complex job won't set foot outside of Mistika except for offline editing. The speed gain we are getting by using Mistika simply means we have more time to make the project look better.

Stereo editing and dual r3d playback has been in Resolve for quite some time too. Of course there is editing and there are editors; so there is still quite some industry wide development work to do for 3D editing. Resolve 8.0 also has stereo auto color and auto alignment match, multitrack timeline and HDRx support too so their a a lot of workflows and systems to consider.
