  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3D DI Theater advice

Here’s a couple of ideas or “brian-farts” for your test and search of S-3d projection systems.

If you go with linear polorizers and linear passive glasses for really nice looking crisp, punchy imagery; you can then easily swap out the linear polorizers for circular polorizers and circular pol’d glasses if you need to match a RealD type look. You might need to introduce an extra plastic filter to the projectors to randomize about 10% of the light to make it look much more like a RealD system.

Which brings me onto my second “brain-fart”; this is almost seven years ago, but I seem to remember that there is this issue of light output from the projector versus the ratio of polarized to non-polorized light that hits the screen. Assuming a ten foot wide screen here; even with really good linear polorizers, if the projector has about 5000 Ansi Lumen or more then the ratio of polarized to “random” light starts to shift and the cleanness of the 3d image starts to break down. So just bear in mind that the hunkiest projectors are not always the best, a more moderate and balanced complete system can deliver higher quality imagery. We also went to great lengths to completely light seal our space to preserve as much good perceived signal as we could. I’m sure your DI studio is probably very light tight.

Definitely don’t buy until you have seen EVERYTHING , and then after that demand that your short list of one or two companies and equipment combinations is tested in the space that you have for at least a week, if you can.

Cheers,

Eric

Thank you everybody for the detailed and valuable feedback.

It is amazing how many schools of thought there are from single projector to dual. From linear to circular passive to active shutter...

Definitely going to make the final decision at NAB. As I said we are still building the theater
