I've always been interested in 3D Depth Matte acquisition methods, but most require additional cameras/sensors (like the Natal, using IR, and Time of Flight principles) and would be hard to implement on Red, or any other camera system. But then I found this technique:
http://nis-lab.is.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~ybando/rgb_filter/
Which allows a normal camera to be used, with the only requirement being a color-filtered aperture (which may or may not be easy, but is still possible with a normal camera).
The potential uses for such a system would be revolutionary. It would lessen the need for greenscreen and rotoscoping (if not completely remove the need for those, assuming the process was improved), which were the two aspects that I was interested in, but now it's even more relevant with the resurgence of 3D cinema. Since depth mattes are extracted, 3D movies could be made with a single camera, (with, of course, some post production, but no where near the amount needed for a typical single camera system).
This doesn't even get into the 3D tracking, and other benefits I haven't even considered.
Anyways, I look forward to the future, and if it's not this, then hopefully it's something that accomplishes the same thing.
