Hi guys,

Apologies if this has been covered before, but is there a chart or calculator anywhere detailing the 35mm equivalent focal length on the RED One when using full-frame 35mm SLR lenses?

It's the same. Unless you mean comparing full frame and super35.

Yes, sorry, full-frame - Just edited my original post to reflect this.

I currently own 3 Zeiss "ZF" SLR lenses - 1x 28mm, 1x 50mm and 1x 85mm. I'm putting a list together of other SLR lenses I'll need, as PL lenses are out of the question at the moment.

I belive you multiple known focal length by either 1.443333333 or
0.692840647.

Math I did (could be wrong, couldn't find a proper source to get the diagonal measurement of Super 35):

I found a place that says Full Frame is 43.3mm dia. and Super35 is 30mm dia.
(http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_lens)

1.443333333 = 43.3/30

0.692840647 = 30/43.3

It is a 1.6 crop factor. It is like shooting with a 50d or any of the nikon non full frame digital slrs.

Hey man. There's a lot of confusion about this, so don't feel bad.

Here's the deal: a 50mm is a 50mm is a 50mm on whatever format/camera/chip you use. Most people think that the lens length is primarily used to denote the field of view. While that is true, and it usually is most commonly used for that, there are other things that are more directly linked to the name - specifically, the things that are directly related to the focal point being Xmm from the sensor/film - mainly the distortion of the lens and the depth of field. Those stay the same no matter what. The "field of view" is going to be what changes from your Full Frame SLR to the S35 RED.

There is a misconception that the 1.6 factor is a conversion for focal lengths. It's not. It's a conversion for field of views. A 50mm on the RED/cropped DSLR will have the field of view that a 70-(something)mm lens would have on your Full Frame DSLR... but it's still a 50mm lens and has the DOF and distortion characteristics of a 50mm lens. This is why, when shooting 16mm film, we don't suddenly start calling a 25mm lens a 50mm lens, just because that's what it corresponds to on a S35 camera. It's still a 25mm lens. It has a "field of view conversion factor to S35" of x2, but it's still a 25mm.

Something else to take into consideration - the super nice, 50mm PL mount Zeiss Ultraprime (etc, etc) will actually be just as cropped when shooting onto the RED as your full frame 35mm lenses will be. Full Frame lenses aren't some sort of poor bastard to cine lenses that require math to use right. They actually have a LARGER throw than S35 PL mount lenses.

Okay, that was a bit much. Hopefully it was more help than me trying to feel smart.
