Hello people,

I am new to RED.. And the acquaintance started with a problem..

I transferred the footage using Apple444.. The transfer went smoothly, apart from taking some 9 hours..

Now I have files with 3072x1536 resolution, which are jerky, as if my MBP isn't powerful enough.. On screen it looks as if I've got a smaller framerate =)

Can that be? I've got C2D2.4MBP 4GB RAM... FCP7.

The video which was shot on RED in 1920 is fine and smooth...

What should I do? Retransfer videos somehow?? Convert to smaller resolution? When I export videos in 1080 it's all fine....

Is there any way I can edit the 3092 footage via some proxies or anything like that? So that I don't have to deal with 3072x1536 files directly?

I can export all the files in 1080 and create the video, but I would rather not loose the 3k quality...

Mac Pro is out of reach and I really need to edit that footage..

Please help...

Laptops hard drives are sloooooooooow. Unless you're connecting a SATA drive via express card or something like that you're going to have problems. And MBP processors are also not necessarily fast enough to keep up a sustained decode of 3k 444.

Immediate best bet is to choose a lower resolution, lower bitrate codec (like 422 or HQ), or use a system that is more capable.

Also, why are you editing in 3k? What is your deliverable (i.e. HD, film, DCP)? You could benefit from editing offline and finishing in something other than FCP (Scratch, DaVinci, etc...), if you have a deliverable that is beyond the capabilities of your current NLE. In other words, get the edit sorted, export an EDL, and then finish on a higher end system using the original .r3d files. That'll usually get you a better result than relying on FCP for final output.

im a little confused. Let me get this right you trancoded your 3k r3d files to prores 444 why? and what are you looking at the 3k files with? if you are using redalert then youll need to lower res to see the footage smoothly on your mac. Prores should look fine in FCP7 as these are likely 1920x1080...edit away and create your EDL finish on another system ie...scratch,pablo..etc to return to your 3k r3d's so you dont lose not only your 3k resolution but more importantly your raw footage's latitude. you'll end up back in HD world unless your doing a filmout, so dont obsess with 3k, and dont feel like your losing anything we have shot super35 for years to end with d-beta deliverable.

best of luck

Aha...
I am editing via firewire800 to RAID0 dual.

The deliverable is HD. Would you please point me to how I can edit offline - I'm not familiar with the process yet..

I must have missed something earlier - I did everything, as I found in one tutorial and this left me with those strange 3k files. Can you please tell me, what do I have to choose in log&transfer to get the result needed for editing..

Thank you for the answers. And sorry for these stupid questions.

prores is finalcut (apple) codec which you indicated you used just opt for 4:2:2 or hq so your finalcut doesnt choke on the higher bitrate i guess i have had no problem with prores 4444 on the MBP but just to be safe and the fact that your not using a rocket and therefor its taking a long time id go with John's suggestion.

Uff, it's all ok now. I love you people.. Wonder what could I have done with that at 4.46AM without Internet?

Thank you very much.

Just to answer about how to do offline/online:

1) transcode redcode to proxy size, for instance 720p or 1080p size, edit with that in FCP (or NLE of choice).

2) Export CMX3600 EDL of your cut, along with reference quicktime movie (to make sure online conform is 100% correct), and audio tracks as aiff or wav files.

3) Deliver EDL, quicktime reference, audio files, and original r3d files to finishing post house, let them/us deal with the rest - that's a job best left for experience, at least until you are sure of your post process. No harm learning as you go.

DISCLAIMER: I'm a colorist that does online assembly edits & color grades with Red (and other cine cameras) for a living, so take my advice for what it's worth...

cheers,

JT

Hi Stepan, have a look at my post in the thread below, a good way in my opinion to achieve what you are after.
