  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3 light LED kit recommendations?

That Supernova looks sweet Aaron. Hard keeping up with all the quality LED that popping up so fast.

If you're on a real tight budget, I picked up 3 of these in 2015 because I constantly had super low budget projects with clients in a new location and needed SOMETHING to pump out light, but stay cool enough to move quickly.

They are definitely not perfect but have earned themselves many times over. Be wary, two of my units work perfect but the 3rd strikes green. I use 1/8minus green on that one to compensate. Obviously go with literally anything higher priced if you can afford it, but these held me over and are now my bang-around lamps.

I recently did a shoot in SF and the local gaffer worked mostly with the Skypanels so we used a pair of those and a set of Astras. I can't say enough great things about both of those lamps. The Astras straight FIRE light out of them unlike any other 1x1 panel I've seen. The Skypanels are in a league of their own. We added a chimera to the front of both the Skypanels for a really great soft wrapped source for interviews.

I've been a holdout on the LED technology. All of the early lights had spikes, limited spectrum, etc. I'm still more of a tungsten fan when it comes to skin tones. I think things are improving rapidly though. So much so, that it's been hard for me to keep up with it all. I finally bit the bullet a few months ago and purchased 2 of these to experiment with because the price was just too damn cheap at the time to pass on it.

Still need to do further testing, but for the price they seem okay.

I might be doing a project coming up where I'll need to fly around with a director shooting interviews and b-roll, so fast paced, micro crew style. I'll probably bring at least one of these along, but I'm on the look out for something even more compact, more versatile. So, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. I know some of you have been keeping tabs on the latest and greatest. Accurate skin tones for the interviews is what I'll be after.

On a modest budget the Aputure COB 120D is a small compact daylight hard light with a lot of output and with a bowens mount so you can attach a fresnel or softbox or any bowens s mount modifiers.

I combine it with their Aputure Light Dome which is an inexpensive decent sized softbox. They also do a $70 fresenel attachment.

Their LS-1 1x1" Panel kicks out an amazing amount of light too.

This is worlds apart from Skypanel money/versatility though. I used to have an Arri L7c and this puts out similar amount of light in a package about 1/3 the size and 1/3 the price.

Hi Ben,

I want to bring my L7c back to you for a full refund :)

Seriously I love the L7c but I'm also adding some LS1's and a COB 120d with some kind of softbox. For traveling faster on smaller jobs.

Surinder.

Your opinion about these two ligths (RAYZR 7 and LUPO DayLed 2000) and the Zylight F8 please ? I'm looking for a Light Fresnel !

http://www.newsshooter.com/2017/03/...he-rayzr-7-daylight-300-and-lupo-dayled-2000/

I've checked the rayzr 7 in person. Unfortunately, I'll have to say that I don't recommend it. But this is completely based on the build quality of the light and not the light quality. I can easily see it not surviving a couple of years of abuse. The tie-downs are cumbersome to use, it takes forever to rotate from spot to flood, and Fresnel glass is made out of plastic.

I've been searching for something myself as well. I keep leaning towards the Lupo SuperPanels. They're not bad at all, and very bright. They have some decent fresnels too.

Been thinking about pulling the trigger on a DS3 kit from digital sputnik. Anybody had any experience with the kit?

FYI - We are doing a Digital Sputnik workshop at OFFHOLLYWOOD with Matthew Workman (http://www.cinematographydb.com/) on April 7th and he will be posting some videos from that event.

for the money digital sputniks should make every shot look like Deakins and Lubezki combined together

true true, Natasha Braier wrote a good review of them in ASC. had a good followup there on Wolksi but I'm sure id be crucified ;)

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I've been looking into LED's, and specifically RGB LED's, for an upcoming project and stumbled across this thread.

I noticed that no one mentioned kino selects. Is there a reason to avoid them?

Kino Flo Selects are awesome, and they are like having the future now.

Arri Skypanels are also fantastic, obviously. :)

Good to know! Thanks for the advice!

Anyone tried the Dedo DLED7 turbo? 90Watt and Bi-Color Fresnel spots, shot two days with 280wh v-mounts on them and was blown away by the color and quality of light. Does anyone know something similar good? Unfortunately Dedos are a bit pricy, around 7000$ for a 3 set bi-color kit.
