Does the Red One use a 3/4" tripod screw ?

answer is both depending what you meant.. both 3/8-16 and 1/4-20s are on the bottom.

And when drilling additional tripod mounting holes in your camera keep in mind that the proper size tap drills are 5/16" for the 3/8"-16 t.p.i. and a number 7 drill for the 1/4"-20 t.p.i. That is unless you are installing helicoils.

It also helps to preheat the base, since it's cast. I recommend a small propane torch. And then use Lots of cutting oil.

This is true Mike. I've always found that kerosene is the best drilling lubricant for aluminum. Should work even faster when heating with a torch.

Recomended cutting lube

Recomended cutting lube

I have always found Tap Magic for Aluminum to be good. (For manual work, It's not very convenient for use on CNC).

DO NOT DRILL MORE HOLES>>>>..!!!@#$!@#%@$^@#$^

i am now starting to understand why we got a camera back with a hole drilled right through it... i cant believe you guys are even contemplating this.

Did y'all seriously get a camera back with a hole in it?!? There must be some crazy and/or stupid people out there.
Peace,

-Harry

Did y'all seriously get a camera back with a hole in it?!?. . . .

I don't doubt they did.
Probably when it came back from New Zealand with holes drilled at the bottom and the rest of the camera held together with #8 Wire and Bailing Twine
