  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3.1.6 tested and it's worst then before

"Self proclaimed" DP's don't understand the technology they are working with, don't make an effort to learn it then use a beta software build, then blame the camera!

Should I take this personally? I really don't want to start flame war.

Be proactive, be professional, and if you don't know, for God's sake hire some one that does know.

I know don't worry.

I apologize if this is a rant, but I am really getting tired of reading post like the one that started this thread.

Than don't read it, you will not get tired. And I will not be tired with "smartar***" who knows everything and can see to another side of world.

Did you call tech support ? Do you have someone on set with enough knowledge to talk to someone at tech support and walk you through some of the possible fixes?
Did you think of staying with a "Know good" build like build 15?

That maybe be a shocker for you but I did! Possible fix on set for what? That camera CAN'T handle smoke+strikes of light? Of course I can shoot without smoke, or without light or to pan somewhere else or to go closer. Did I think about staying? Yes I did, and there was no go for me. And this beta build was a really fast and good respond from RED, this BETA build was made for few of us here, who experienced problems. And we were willing to try it out. Find out it's not the way RED should go.

So I shouldn't post about bugs, just because you are annoyed with it? Maybe other people will find it useful and will not load this firmware in good will. :red_bandana:

I meant settings in Red Alert, sorry about the confusion. Have you changed various settings in Red Alert to see if anything triggers a different result of the frame (for example, changing sharpness). Just want to make sure there is nothing happening in RA that could be sign of a bug.

Triple checked it now with RedAlert. No it appears as solid written down codec error inside the R3D file.

Sorry Steve, not my case, but thanks for constructive approach!

There is a new build on the way, perhaps as early as tomorrow. Let's hope it helps clear things up for you.

Sorry, but that dog doesn't bark.

I had these same types of codec errors on stable Build 15, but I mistook them for flaws in my new-used el cheapo Angenieux lens -- which has performed quite beautifully, minus what I now realize are codec errors. But since they appeared the very first time that I used the lens, I thought, "that's what $800 buys in a cine lens..." -- I thought the focus was falling off and that the lens needed maintenance.

At the time that I shot the footage, these types of codec errors were not a broadly discussed issue, and I had just switched to the Angeniuex lens.

Suddenly, these days everyone is talking about trees and codec errors...

...and now I finally grasp why the lens has performed perfectly on every other shoot besides that first one (which had lots of trees...)

Thanks, Issic, for posting these stills, they are a revelation. And thanks, as always, Steve, for trying to dig deeper into these problems instead of assigning blame.

I'm going to have to go back through this old footage and massage it through both RA and RC and see how it responds. I'm sure that I don't have a LOG file, but at least now I know how to manufacture one, for future reference. These discussions are quite valuable.

If I can find the time, I think I'll take Build 16 and my cheapie lens back to the same location and see if I can recreate the issue/break the codec on nearly the exact same images.

NO U SHOULD!!! The only way for progress is trial by error. I think there's a lot of fanboys who unfortunately are missing the big picture in this.

Keep it coming - over flow RED with it. As long as RED keep pushing themselves to solve it, as they are right now, we are getting better cam.

You're the perfect guinea pig (hahahahaha) having an on going project like you do.
