  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

2K r3d 1600 ISO looks amazing

Was the monitoring path set to 1600ISO or was it captured at ISO800 and then pushed to 1600 in post? I upped it to 3200ISO and it's still noiseless (although I do add the default "Super 35 Grain" in RCXp, which probably masks it a bunch.) I added unsharp mask at default settings and you can't tell that it's "only" 2k on at a 1440x900 monitor (that is to say, it looks as good as 4k sampled down to fit the same screen).

And, yes, I love the 85 nikkor... even the older f2 I have.

Thanks for the feedback guys, but like I said, nothing special going on here other than the lens. I recorded it at 1600 ISO and black shaded a few days before. The one other thing that might be helping is the compression ratio since it was shot at 3:1.

The latest one :)

So I guess, the rumors about the camera geting noisier with this firmware are not 100% true :).

I tried to export a MOV out of your footage in REDCINE-X PRO but all my attempts (many different codec settings) had gamma shifts. Any one knows how to overcome this problem?

When you setup your export settings click on video setup:

Make sure gamma correction is set to NONE:

Also make sure in your RedcineX Pro Preferences that you auto save RMD so your color and adjustments stick once an adjustment or tweak is made instantaneously.

Wow! Looks great man! It's rare to get me in front of the lens...let alone see me on YouTube hehe :) Twixtor is pretty impressive...Thanks for sharing :)

nice. I am thinking what to name our Epic.

We must be seeing different posts. I have read some where people didn't like 2K but I've not seen a single one with "whining," which is a very dramatic statement. It's hard to imagine how that would even apply. Let's be careful about how we characterize others' comments.

Matthew, did you do something "special" while shooting to achieve this kind of imagery in 2K, I mean change some settings in a certain way etc.?

It's just that I keep reading and hearing about 2K being soft and noisy and all kinds of "not good enough", and this image proves all that whining wrong.

Hey Matt, Thanks!

Unfortunately i had done all that already. My Blacks keep getting lifted a little.

Are you using mac? Could be a quicktime gamma and/or colour profile issue.

Every time I set any of my macs to "HD 709-A" profile (to get it to represent an HDtv-like display) Apple Apps like FCS no longer show preview video (they just a weird black silhouette) and Adobe Apps use their own profile within the app (which then look like ass when played back in QT). Honestly, if you've ever experienced Apple's colour profile and gamma issues (which it sounds like you might be), you'd wonder how they ever got to where they are in the professional realm (it really is atrocious.)

Also, what are you using for viewing the files? If it's quicktime player, maybe try something else (VLC is free and fairly efficient) to see if the same shift occurs. I know that when quicktime made the switch to 10 or X or something, they had their own gamma thing going on that needed to be manually turned off... could be a similar thing happening to you.

Here is a quick correction in AE:

I added a slight s curve, added one instance of Magic Bullet Noise Reduction, and Twixtor. Make sure to watch in it's Original size (2K).

It's most likely the apple gamma issue then. Are you exporting as Prores 444? My blacks always get lifted a bit in 444.
