So my local theater is totally digital. They have Christie 2k projectors in the theater. I was wondering if somebody could help me out. If I wanted to screen my movie there in 2K, what would I have to use to get it to the projector? I'm absolutely clueless to this, but think it would be so great to be able to screen it in 2k digital. Thanks!

A friend of mine played his movie straight from a laptop into a Christie2k at a theater. It was 1080P and they had to set up REC709 on the projector I think. It looked great BTW.

Go to the theater and see what they say. I'd assume you'd be allowed some testing before the big night.

Most theater will not allow any one else to plug or unplug anything to their stuff. Best way is find to out what media you can give them that they can play. Hopefully they have Sony HDCAM-SR deck.

1080p is not a bad distro format only 5% diff, most people can not tell the diff anyway.

P. S. IT dept. would have a nightmare if they let anyone mess with the equipments.

Yes, best to switch the projector to 1080 and feed it from a JH3.
Audio can be problematic, we had 5.1 surround encoded and
a 5.1 stem on discreet tracks (DA98) and still could not get
any joy from the theatre's surround PA on our last test screening to a large audience. Screened stereo in the end.
(not allowed to change Dolby presets) sounded OK. Much head scratching from the audio post guys. Try and set up a test
before the night.
Can be difficult with a working theatre complex. So Good Luck.

We are also using HDCAM all the time for team (pre)premieres etc.
HDCAM can record AC3 5.1 Sound, which can make synced surround easier.

I used a SRW- deck for a premiere in October of 2006 in Charlotte.

The results were fantastic...it was Ovens Auditorium we just finished “Dale” (nominated for an Emmy this year). Ovens Auditorium seats about 1,500 people and no one could notice it was not film…needless to say that event sold me on digital cinema!
You will not find many theaters that have SRW deck’s we brought our own.

Most theaters are still using Mpeg 2 servers or Dorame servers if you’re lucky.

The newer Christie projectors should take HD-SDI as a source, and may rent time to you if you can convince them to go right into the projector with HD-SDI from your source at a frame rate of 27.976.

I just returned form a private viewing of the U2 3D movie in Burbank. They were using a BARCO projector running HD-SDI and it looked fantastic!

Hi Laguun,
We had AC3 on two DA98 tracks and 6 Discreet (5.1) tracks on the same machine. Stereo mix on the JH3. No trouble with Sync JH3/DA98. Trouble
with the Dolby decoder and surround PA.
Never got to the bottom of it, I'm no sound head, I'll have to read up on the
dolby decoder when time permits.

Hi David,
Yes we screened for investors using the Barco and SRW in a smaller
venue, very nice.
But I was surprised how good the HDcam 8 bit (JH3) stuff looked delivered/dubbed
from an uncompressed 1080p source and splattered across the big screen.
Very acceptable in a 400 seat theatre.
By the way whats a Dorame server,if I may ask?
Mezmo

I guess he meant a DOREMI Server from Doremilabs. Inc.
I'm wondering if still some Qubits around there in digital cinemas...

Thanks Michael for the info, I'll go Google.
