  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

28K Brainstorm

I was thinking that IMAX style productions would benefit from having a camera like this for some shots.

IMAX is trying to convert to digital projection and while I'm not sure of the specs of their digital projection system the big question is if it's going to be on par with the potential quality of a current IMAX film print. From what I've heard, they're planning on significantly smaller screens which makes me think it's a step backwards in the IMAX ideology although it is probably going to save them quite a bit of money in the long run.

28k, huh? So if 4k is 4 times larger than 2k, that should mean that 28k is 49 times the size of 4k. Right?

28K 3:1 is 261,352,000 pixels.

4K 16:9 is 9,437,184 pixels.

28K is 27.69 times larger than RED One 4K 16:9.

Battle Shots would look awesome on this. Do you think they can up the frame rates to 30 on the 617? Just Kidding of course.:)

I hope they get faster frame rates for the 617, like up to 50. I could only imagine shooting a movie with huge battle scenes like in Lord of the rings, and 617 used for principal photography, the quality and depth would be immaculate.

617's 28K could definitely work great for documentary shooting, crash cam, helmet cam, home movies and of course an accessory hook up for a picture phone.

:)

Turn it sideways and shoot some one on green screen. More pixels = clean edges.

As mark said... Digital Signage.

We've got an application for 28K in the works that, if it comes off (and we're a long way from getting there, so don't hold your breath) is gonna blow everyone away...

Hmmm... I think Jim's teasing nature is starting to rub off on me!

In fact, we'd love way more than 28K - bring it on...

Lol, yeah - I know how that sounds! But trust me, we're doing something very, very different here - it's gonna be real fun...

you would have no trouble pulling a key from 28k ...i wonder what the depth of field would be like and how would you calibrate it ?

i had a running joke with an old flat mate when i had mistakingly call a s35 film back a 35cm film back ,we called it christianascope like it was an impossible size ....little did we know

the 28 K sensor. in real estate terms, can fit 24x4k,
imagine a front optical prisms/filters module that can reflect/redirect from a single regular lens 24 different simultaneous exposures of what the lens is seeing, the 24 images are recorded on the one big image.
Later on the software will process those big frames into an HDR single 4K frame.
4K hdr...
I suppose that for a million reasons it is impossible...

I see your point , so essentially youd have an ultra ultra hi res 4k framed image @ 28k res and size ??

Christian, the idea (or the fantasy ) is more about an incredible dynamic range obtained by achieving 24X4k images simultaneous "bracketing" using the huge surface of the sensor.
The 28 K one frame plate will have a serie of 24 images from extremely low to extremely high exposures, all recorded side by side in one frame.

This fantasy could be achieved by having the sensor enabled to achieve 24 different local sensibilities, or 24 different local shutter speeds combined with a matrix filter and/or optical filters in the prisms. This crazy combination makes the single huge sensor able to get high details from very dark to very bright to be combined in post in a single HDR image, easy... :) we have an s35 HDR motion camera.
The small lighting kit would become the only lights you'll ever need and DPs can finish the lighting in post (DDPs ?)

OK it may need a different version of the sensor which is basically 24 different sensors built like a single one.

The few stops lost in the optical module are compensated by the huge Drange.

Any expected release date ?
