  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

25-250 Angenieux Night Test

... We shot @ 500ASA with the Angenieux 25-250 f3.9 (pre-HR/HP). As Jim referred to it on Red Day, it's an antique.

There's some vignetting on the wide end of the lens, and some distortion going on everywhere else. You can see some of it with the out of focus xmas tree lights, where on the sides of the frame it looks like a 3 bladed iris. It's a $700 lens and acts like it.

...

Hi CJ,

Thanks for sharing. The 1k looks great, I'd love to see the 4k. I bought the same lens, but am waiting for Jorge Diaz-Amador at Cinematechnic in Miami to convert it to PL. Was yours already in PL ?

The christmas lights look great. I take it your were wide open as the shape is nearly round although you can see it's three sided. I wonder what the bokeh looks like if you're stopped down. I'm looking forward to testing mine out, but I guess that won't be for at least another couple months...

A couple more questions : did you use some kind of support with the lens ? And any chance you could post a picture of the camera with the lens on it please.

Cheers,
Damien

We used this lens alot with our Pro35 and Varicam to shoot music videos because it was such a messed up lens, clients loved the look of it and it was nice to have that range 25-250 pig of a lens though. We just bought the newer version of this lens a 25-250HR cant wait to try this one out on the Red.

Cool looking stuff guys!

Amazing night shots and a girl.

Also looking forward to test one another 25-250mm zoom vintage 35mm lens with PL mount from Rank Optics Taylor-Hobson today better known as Cooke.
Cooke Cine Varotal 25-250mm for 35mm with PL mount from the beginning of 80's. I paid € 1.500 for the lens.

I loved the look of it. That, I believe, is the most filmic looking footage I've seen so far. Too bad H.264 is 8bit--otherwise I would think her skin would be very soft and smooth.

I'm also thinking of the Cooke 25-250 as a second lens for when I need more reach.

Nice!
I like that distortion on xmas tree lights, it dont need to be perfect

It's up on RedRelay as well.

I've said this to you already, CJ but man you have some good looking stuff there. Great optics, great range.

Any color correction done to the clip at all?

Those are the best $700 worth of footage I've seem so far from RED, organic, fluid and engaging, centering your attention on the subject and rendering the edges pleasantly and conveniently soft and unfocused, just as human vision works. Where can I buy one of those babies?

Gee I remember not that long ago if you mentioned the old 10 to 1 zooms you were berated and told to get real. Seems some are having a change of heart here. While the coverage at the wider end is a bit anemic for S-35 I believe it can be delt with in post. These old lenses put into the hands of a decent optical tech (preferablly someone with experience in the repair of them) can genneraly be tweaked to perform quite nicely. The 6 to 1 (20-120) which came out afterwards was a superior lens in both optical and mechanical aspects. And of course if you can use a smaller stop for the shot your even more better off. Zoom lenses are mechanically complex and need to be checked and serviced to assure their best performance.

Here's a 6 to 1 package that caught my eye. Not the finest zoom control, but was widely used at the time.

Too bad you took a beating Chuck. I think I took a bit of a beating at one time for asking about using promists and the like to soften the image a bit. Some people think it's crazy to have such high resolution and not use it, but like Dale said, it's going to be fun to experiment with old lenses and get different looks.

DALE: I can't wait to see some music video footage with the Lensbaby:)

Not me..although I remember responding to a discussion somewhere about what to lookout for when buying older zooms.

Great post guys! Wow, now I want an old lens :-)

Chuck, where is this post of yours?

Btw, where can I buy this lens for $700? I'd whip out the card now if so. I found it on Visual Products for $1500+ a fee to convert it to PL mount.

Is there away one can call up their previous posts?

Hi Chuck,

I stripped mine down for the glass to use as a prop. I paid $300 from Digital Domain on EBay.

There is Cooke 20-100 Varotal zoom 35mm lens with PL mount for € 1.500 at Holland Equipment Rental in Amsterdam.
If you have VAT number you don't pay a local Duch tax.
You pay just for US Import taxes.
