Hey all-

I love this camera. Thank you Jim, and the rest of the Red team.

DP Anthony Kwan & I shot this in my backyard to just test some night exteriors. We shot @ 500ASA with the Angenieux 25-250 f3.9 (pre-HR/HP). As Jim referred to it on Red Day, it's an antique.

There's some vignetting on the wide end of the lens, and some distortion going on everywhere else. You can see some of it with the out of focus xmas tree lights, where on the sides of the frame it looks like a 3 bladed iris. It's a $700 lens and acts like it.

Mirrors REALLY appreciated. My server's getting nailed.

Thanks.

I actually like that look of that lens. The picture doesn't have the usual crispness of the red zoom. the image seems a little more organic to me. I like the feel. Not bad for $700.

I don't know what you're talking about. Those images were awesome. I want that lens! I agree with spinfight, had a real earthy look to it. What did you do for lighting?

I couldn't agree any more.

That was amazing.

I would love to see what that lens does in the daylight, because it looks golden in the night.

I think the lens can produce some really nice images. It doesn't have that sharpness that some of the newer lenses have, which I dislike. This one, however, has the vignetting, a lot of distortion on the wide side of the lens, and from 200-250mm it has some strange softness. Almost like a diffusion/promist. I'm not sure of the proper term for it. You can see some of it on close-up of the eyes.

I'm looking forward to testing some zeiss standards & super speeds. I think they'll have that look that I'll like.

For the backyard we used a 1200par bounced into a white reflector disc, a double 4ft Kino bank and 650fresnel for rim/hair light. We varied up which played key/fill, etc.

For the 1st table shot, we used the kino double bank for key, 1 650w bounced off a reflector on the table and a 300 for rim.

For the candle simulation, we used the 150w for snooted on the candle, the 650w bounced off a gold reflector for key and the kino double bank for rim.

Thanks for the info. Still sounds like it has some promise. Maybe not full range, but still usable for the right style of project.

Thanks again CJ.

Sorry CJ, but is that lens 16, Super16 or 35? I see that in your link it says 2k....did you shoot at 2k?

Thanks,

Jason

EDIT: Also, congratulations on getting your camera.

It's a 35 lens. We shot in 4k. For ease, I exported a 2k tiff sequence, converted that to black magic 10bit for editing. Then a 1k H264 from there.

I'm still figuring out the post workflow, but it's kind of difficult without an Intel Mac tower.

Thanks CJ. I'm thankful for all you pioneers out there going through it and making it work.

ok, it's up at http://www.bealecorner.org/red/

Thanks again for the showing us the test! in this 1k file at least, I didn't notice anything objectionable about the lens. Anyway, as long as you are showing a pretty girl, usually there are no complaints. :-)

Very nice guys... Very nice variety, thank you for the footage.

Nice to see this old baby on a RED. Shot a lot with this lens and liked it for its softness. Breathes a lot. Nothing for packs, architecture etc. but nice for moody people shots (no need for diffusion). Well maintained vintage lenses can be the right choice for certain applications.

That lens produces a very soft & smooth look, almost as if it had a 1/2 black promist filter on.

I definitely like the look of it!

I particualrly liked the lighting setup that began on minute 1:15 of the clip, great work guys, thanks!
