So, now that we are coming into the winter months and some of us may have a little more time than the spring and summer months demand, I was thinking about a REDusers 24hr film festival. Just a thought at the moment but if there is enough interest I'm sure we could pull together a really interesting group of submissions. Plus, I've never personally competed in one and would love to do so.
It could be all online. All the submissions could be submit to Vuze.com and I can give us our own channel specifically for the competition similar to the RED Channel; http://www.vuze.com/channel/hd/red_digital_cinema.
This way it can be organized and everyone can view the submissions in HD at great quality. I am still figuring out details as to possible sponsors, judging and prizes but first i wanted to see a count as to how many would participate.

Any takers?

oops, sorry, accidentally deleted my message, ha. I guess it matters what kind of configurations people are working on, but yeah, seems Rendering/Processing footage would take a good chunk of the time......unless r3d support for FCP or other systems magically pops up! :)

I think its doable. The whole point of a competition like this is to be creative and have fun all the while figuring out the best way to organize yourself in Production and Post. Like I said, maybe 48hrs is easier and makes more sense.

sounds interesting. we´ve a similar competition at the berlinale film festival. you get 5 days to develop a story produce, shoot and post the film to be screened in a competition in the end of the week.
48 hours is a real competition. :weight_lift:

Why 24 or 48 hours? "Fast filmmaking" is full of compromises. Why not take all winter and do it right?

I'm down for this. I think 48 hours is a must, maybe even a bit more.

Like I said, its open to suggestions and all valid points so far! Keep the ideas coming and I'll start contacting some folks about judging, prizes, sponsors etc.
Seems like the time issue is going to be pretty relevant here which will be seriously considered and addressed over the course of the next week.

I know this idea has been thrown around before but I would really like to make this happen officially!
Keep em' coming!

Maybe a weekend (or over a "holiday" weekend, 72 hrs., a week, etc.) Online would be a cool thing (international fill in the black with a hour film festival), and all projects have to be uploaded by a certain time universally (0800GMT,, for example), and the information (i.e. unifying plot or piece of dialogue or whatever so deemed) would be released at a specified time "starting" the film festivals clock. Though implausible because its about a week away, it would be funny to have the unifying dialogue of the fesxtival be to ready Jim's first post about the new information / release of hte DSMC / scarlet / epic, and thus once that information is released, the film festival starts, to add to the RED theme.

This is funny. With Red's post workflow, it may as well be 70mm film competition. If this goes, I an only imagine how many people will be staring at the transcode bar in RedRushes/RedCine asking themselves if they'll ever make it in time. I know this sounds cynical, but I've worked with this camera everyday for the past seven months and the post workflow continues to suck, with no end in sight.

Nick.

Count me in..
maybe a time frame would be good.... 2minutes long or something like that.

Good feedback so far! I'm putting the wheels in motion as we speak. I've heard lots of suggestions for the amount of time needed for the competition but what kind of prizes would you all like? Hardware tools, software workflow tools, etc. Do you want a judges choice and peoples choice award, do you want all the voting to happen in a thread here on reduser and skip any judges? In the spirit of the election I kinda like the idea of a high vote/rating on Vuze and high vote poll here on reduser. But you tell me what you think.
This competition is all about us as redusers and I want the majority here to influence the competition as much as possible to be fun for all involved.

The only thing I've locked in stone right now is that the majority of your film must be shot on a RED camera and Vuze will host the submissions. Everything else will be worked out by end of next week (hopefully).

I know what I want for a prize. Native .R3D support in FCP.
That way everybody wins. :-D
