Two challenges:

I have a sequence of 4K and 2k (shot 2:1 and output from Redcine to FCP as prores 422 files) that I was told needed to be exported to an SD DVD, so I set my sequence settings to DV NTSC and outputted via compressor to DVD

Now they want an HD QT file, which leaves me to solve two problems.

One: I figured the best way to output would be as a QT file using prores, but I can't seem to find a setting that would maintain the aspect ratio (although I would be willing to crop if I have to). I'm definitely open to suggestions there.

Two: Since the original sequence was set to DV NTSC, I am outputting with those dandy black bars in a 4:3. Is there a way to output at the 2:1 (or whatever I crop to) from that sequence?

Thanks in advance

i'm assuming your 2:1 settings are standard 2048x1024, make that your frame size and then everything should be correct aspect ratio, who cares if it's broadcast format or not, if they want full res qt just give it to them full res, if they want it for actual delivery specs then in order to maintain 2:1, you'll have to give them 1920x1080 with some letterboxing, it's just how it has to be.

you can output dvds in fullo frame anamorphic, in fcp, change your sequence settings to click the "anamorphic" check box next to pixel aspect ratio then bring your clips back in and re-export with compressor, the end result will be full frame widescreen!

Thanks Thom.

I rebuilt the reel in a new sequence with the right settings and exported at 1080p24 Prores. It looks amazing. True there are still little black bars, but that 's fine.

Thanks for the tip on the anamorphic. I think I'll just keep my settings the new way and export the way you suggest if I need full screen.

Jeez, I love working with this footage.

no problem, glad i could help!

That anamorphic is only if you want to use fcp to make your dvd, if you take that full res hd file directly into compressor it will automatically recognize as widescreen and export as anamorphic for you! that way you don't have to use fcp to conform to sd dvd just make compressor do it!
