I think 8K is as far as the resolution needs to go...not that it will stop there. It wont!

4K is already phenomenal. dont get me wrong the 8k from nhk looked great at nab, but at some point the industry is going to settle on a resolution number...I think that is and will be 4K for distribution for a longtime to come. And capture probably won't exceed 8K...I mean at some point dynamic range, noise/ grain structure, pixel quality, reducing the weight/ size of the overall camera, and color science should be the main focuses along with figuring out the light field technology to work in the 4k realm ;)

And 65/70mm sensors ;) whic Panavision is going to unleash in the not to distant future and I heard it looked "incredible" back in January ;)

Werent 8K projections during London Olympic games?

Seven years from now, I bet we'll be shooting 8K on iPhones. But that doesn't mean it'll look good. The K is just a number.

I was talking with a producer yesterday and he said he spoke with a very well known DP who made an observation about resolution. Yes the detail may be there, but it doesn't necessarily make an image beautiful.

We employ a lot of techniques in digital to create a pleasing image to our eye. Which is why there's been some discussion of low con filters, roll off, and old glass -particularly with Dragon. And RedCine-X is also at a point where we can manipulate an image to get some great 'one-light' passes before exporting to the editing system of choice...I still don't work natively in 4K in large part due to the wonks of Avid, but that's okay for now. We would all like to see Avid get with the program and have projects resolution independent, especially with EOL on DS.

I'd also point out that somewhere our eyes stop resolving for a fixed image width. So the higher res, the bigger screens you can have, but thats it. For cinema this may be great, but everything else, I'd have to check the math to see what makes sense. And olympic games will be mostly watched at home. So unless you want to punch into the image while watching I'd say you would need a damn big living room for this to be interesting. ;)

Please note: I didn't say I didn't like the 8K demos I saw. It is great resolution wise. But mostly when I get up close to the monitor and still see that it's sharp ;) Didn't care for the look though

I think 24K is the magic number that will be needed for holograms. Leia looked a bit blue but that was a long time ago. The future will have her looking red...ha, ha.

I think the industry can get a bit tied up with specs and forget to ask how will this make content more enjoyable or engaging.
