  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

2019 RTX Laptops - Worth it?

i ma really torn between Razor Blade 15 Advanced and Razor Studio with Quadro on the one side or Macbook Pro 16 now when Red and Apple figured things out. i have Helium 8k and it would be nice if my wrangling machine was also be capable of playback, making Proxies and doing some editing on a go. I am no post guy so for me less i pay and less i have to fiddle with PC the better. My key question is how much is this Razer Studio Quadro better then Macbook 16" in a real life Davinchi and Cine X tasks with 8k footage?? is it worth of extra 2k and fiddling with PC? what is a realistic performance boost? form what i understand RTX or Quadro laptops are still way below "same" desktop counterparts and we all know how 8k is demanding so the question is how good is this for us 8k people? If i end up running 1/4 rez and rendering proxi's then what is the point spending 6k on PC laprop in a first place?

So far Metal r3d decompression performance is really not great... Sure, it'll get better, but it took Resolve ~6+ months just to enable it, so I'm thinking 12mths before it's up to speed (at which point, there'll be new MBPs and/or new PC GPUs/CPUs that can churn through r3ds at double the speed via brute force and/or same speed for half the price.)

Did you end up getting a Razer? I'm in the same boat and about to lay some money down on the Base model with 2070 to handle my Helium rushes. Would love to hear from anyone that uses this setup for reviewing footage and doing backups in the field.
 
I can't speak for Razor laptops but the Gigabyte I bought earlier in this thread suffers from a fair amount of heat throttling. While it's "okay" for editing work, I wouldn't recommend it and wish I had bought something else. So just for those considering a Gigabyte, make sure you're aware of any heat throttling issues that could affect performance. The newer ones seem to have updated airflow though. Not sure if that helps.
 
So are you saying there MacBook Pro 16 inc should be okay. I bought a Komodo last month so I’ll be upgrading my computer to work with the 6k on davinci resolve and premiere pro
 
Agreed, I'm very happy with the perfomance on my Razer Studio Edition. Although, you really gotta keep it plugged in or your graphics card gets quite throttled, par for the course with most UHD-8K capable mobile workstations.
 
I don't recommend any of the MSI laptops, get the M1 MacBooks instead.
