A few months ago I got a call to be DP on the new 2015 Subaru WRX STi launch video. We shot this over 2 days in the hills west of Windsor, CA and the Russian River Valley on a private 11,000 acre ranch. Lots of fun in the dirt and on the pavement!

Shot on RED Epic @ 4k 120FPS 5:1
Angenieux Optimo 17-80
Pursuit Systems Porsche Cayenne

And here is one Behind the Scenes photo from the shoot:

Thanks guys! Both of the shoots were super fun to work on. They gave me a lot of freedom to do some fun things on this shoot.

However, it does always make me sad to know how much ends up on the cutting room floor. There were some rad sequences that never made it in...

The close ups you got were sick, all round great job. Want to shed some light on the BTS Pic?

Thanks- I have worked with the driver Tony Brakiohapa many times, so I felt confident sticking the camera in there pretty far.

The BTS pic was something that I posted on Instagram/Facebook for the 2 minutes I had internet reception... Photo tagline- "Apparently the 35mph speed limit still applies even when you have CHP officers shutting down the roads for you." Turns out my dad freaked out, called family in the area and asked them to bail me out of jail.

The reality was- we shut down the roads for the shoot and had 20 minutes to wait as the cars drove up. We were so bored we staged a picture and got the CHP officer to play along.

Needless to say, don't post pics like this if your dad frequents Facebook and you have no cell phone reception to answer his call to tell him its a joke. :)

Wish Those rad sequences would of made it in. I love Subaru WRX STi's. May have to finally drop the cash and get this one.

Pro style! I wonder if the crane have some kind of gimball or is it just stabilizing on the camera?

Joel- the crane itself has no stabilization. Think of it as a tank turret- because it basically is. The head has 4 separate gyros that work together to keep the camera stable. When we get to the shoot, the head tech fine tunes the gyros to make sure that there are no balance issues. On the controls for the head inside the car you also have to do slight corrections every so often for the head, preventing drift up / down and left / right.
