2010 World Cup Thread

Hope Portugal will beat our brothers of Spain!

E. :-)

spains goal was irregular.
again the ref fucked up.
although it was really hard to see this time.

saturday armando has to cry for argentina...hehe
the germans will win by penalty and messi will miss from the spot.

wow, the two most important matches will be two neighbours (holland and germany) playing against two neighbours (argentina and brasil)! It's really a matter of northern europe playing against southern south america

would love to see a netherlands germany final, although brasil vs argentina would be cool too.

(i have the feeling ignoring spain will not help at all...hehe)

Sorry, it wasn't. Our national broadcasting company showed the goal several times in slow motion and in HD, and it was very clearly not offside.

Even if the lack of our traditional strong midfield is not excuse. 38% of ball possession against 62% either.

This 'italian catenaccio' imported by the former number 2 of Manchester United and Alex Ferguson would embarass Pedroto [ LINK ] -- a famous portuguese coach before Mourinho and one of the fathers of typical portuguese style of playing soccer (somewhere between the european and south american aka euro-brazilian).

As another midfielder Nils Liedholm [ LINK ] was used to say, a team should hold the ball 90 min.s per match. And when it needs to give it to the adversary after a goal, is always a stupid thing to do... (go figure! LOL ;-)

The defense is on the midfield, not ahead the goalkeeper. Even when the goalkeeper, Carvalho, Bruno Alves, Coentrão, Pepe, Ferreira or Miguel (BTW a great offensive defender who didn't play the match) are one of the best defenses of the World Cup. Too much self-confident coming from the overwhelming pragmatic 0-0 with Brazil (Portugal could and should beat them) as well IMHO.

They freeze the play and superimpose a line in an attempt to show an offside position, but they do so well after the ball has been kicked. As best as I could see from this video, it looks as though we was onside when the ball was kicked.

Of all the controversial calls/plays/goals in this World Cup, I wouldn't list this as one of them...

As said, this doesn't serve as excuse but in any way, here we go... :-)

I cannot place the player in line -- even on the edge, if you can prove that we are wrong, go ahead ;-)

sorry Emanuel

sorry Emanuel

Move on man, everyone did. not an offside. Time to look forward to the QF. Spain and Uruguay will have it easy but I'm still hoping for Germany-they have good chances IMO:thumbsup:

Sure, Jacek. No worries whatever this department is :-) The cases of England and Mexico are even much more notoriously disgraceful. I just tried to enlighten what I didn't see (live) but a 2nd look shows to me and to many others (who have been forwarding to the mailbox the infamous pics LOL ;-)

Here's the overhead view...this was after the ball was kicked, but prior to the youtube clip where they freeze the frame...either way, the player in question looks to be onside to me. Sorry Emanuel...not a Spain loyalist, just think they made the right call.

Edit: I didn't see the possible flick before...still tough to tell from this particular clip, but you may have reason to be upset.

No matter the outcome, your boys played well.

LOL This is soccer. They should have played better and we wouldn't be here discussing peanuts (? :-) Everything from Iniesta's pass to...(but) Xavi's back heel (in-between) to David Villa -- the man of the match, anyway.

A curious note is the name of the 2nd man of the match: Llorente. I have no idea if anyone else took notice but almost 22 years ago, in the 1987-88 season, when the portuguese FC Porto (another love of mine) defended the European Champions Cup won half year before (against Bayern Munich*) a player had entered and changed the history in behalf of the spanish Real Madrid beating the champion FC Porto. As same spanish name as now in the World Cup. The guy enters in the middle of the match (like his homonymous almost 22 years before) and his name is also Llorente. Both 'Llorente' mean and really are a change in the course of events. Curious coincidence...

Controversy aside, I feel bad for Eduardo. He played a really great game against some very tough shooters (in fact he gave a fantastic performance at the Cup overall - didn't let in a single goal in the "Group of Death"), made some terrific saves, and was clearly, and understandably, broken up by Portugal's exit from the World Cup.

aye, today is the day holland is going to be kicked out of the wc. At least we won from Brazil yesterday, at...what's it called in English, hand ball?
Or maybe they've held their braces up to now and Bert van Marwijk has a Blitzkrieg up his sleeves for the afternoon

Don't underestimate the power of your own team; Holland winning 2-1 with 5 minutes to go. Brasil wasted their chance to secure their position, and to complicate things, got 1 man thrown out. That's the unpredictable nature of football

Edit: BRASIL's out! Who would've thunk it.

Prediction: Ghana beats Uruguay 2-1 as well.

my dreamfinal netherlands vs germany can come true.
brasil didnt deserved it anyway.
dunga is te wrong coach for the selecao.
which idiot doesnt nominate ronaldinho, pato and diego?
who the fuck is nilmar?
and they played horrible football. brasil has to play samba style, samba style made them 5 time world champions...
dunga's brasil played catenaccio
