This short reel shows highlights from three different RED storm chasing shoots taken this Spring and Summer in the Midwest. My thanks to Annette Gaillard who was DP on one of those trips. Most of the shots are MX.

File size around 22mb. Be sure and have the audio up.

Nature can be both terrible and beautiful.

Phil,

That was some veeerry realistic 3D! Totally awesome. I kept my eye open for the lighting shots, I remember you posting that shots were struggling with the rolling shutter issue.

Thanks again for sharing. Good stuff.

Thanks Michael. I edited out the rolling shutter lightning. It probably affected about 20% of the lightning strikes.

You're welcome Phil. I enjoyed all three chases and came back with a lot of experience from the second one. I'm looking forward to outdoing you again next season. LOL

Doesn't play on my iPad.

*Gasp* that was intense. looks gorgeous!

Lenses?

Thanks Aaron! We used Nikon Pro Zooms because they are fast (quick), light and convenient. Mostly the 17-35 but also the 12-14 and 24-85.

The main goal of these shoots was to catch tornados. There is very little setup time, so we had a light and lean RED rig.

Nice work Phil! Love the use of time lapse...way cool. There is nothing quite like working out in the raw elements of nature. Its full of challenges - but the rewards make it well worth it!

Mobility and lightness of a rig are inversely connected - the lighter the rig the more mobile, and vice versa. The camera setups you described summarize my approach to setting up my Red One cameras ever since August 30, 2007 when I received my first Red camera (SN 0008) - Nikon zooms, no matte boxes (screw-on filters), and no follow focus (hand racking via operator) - lean, mean camera setups. Certain genres of production simply call for small rigs like that. The large crew, cine style guys will never quite understand mobile non-hardlined EFP style field production - but those of us who shoot regularly in that style deeply understand two key concepts for that production style - that form follows function, and that smaller size increases mobility. IMO 35mm still zooms are far and away the best choice for that style of production - excellent glass and small.

Again, great stuff Phil :)

Thanks Steve,

Another thing I like about the lean camera setup is that you are really not compromising image quality as long as you are shooting statics and simple tilts & pans. If you are shooting towards the sun, a simple hand-held flag will work instead of a matte box. I love high mobility shooting!

Thanks again for having a look and sharing your positive feedback. :)

Great looking footage, and nice time lapse work.

We were diving in Curacao last week and one night we sat on our balcony having a glass of wine and watched some awesome lightning displays not unlike these. It was amazing! Next time I'll have to bring my camera lol.

Best weather for suicide kiting :)

I'd love to be there at such times. Went to the carribean sea many times in the storms season, but never had been in the tornado alley yet.

Somewhat earlier, and we could have used those backgrounds on Nydenion feature :) (see the other thread here).

Thumbs up, very nice images!
Incredible to see these clouds turning, spectacular!
