Peter Jackson (and his team) has now shot the equivalent of 20 million feet of film on The Hobbit. For reference, he shot 7 million feet of film on The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Peter is shooting up to 50 RED Epics on The Hobbit. And there is still time to go...

When I had dinner with Peter a couple of weeks ago... he was happy. If Peter is happy, I'm happy.

Nice.
It’s a huge, Congratulations to RED Team

Even with a shooting ratio of 100:1, the movies would each be over 16 hours long :-)

Peter has the most incredible Army to handle all they are shooting. It is amazing... really.

That comes out to 1,100 Terabytes or more than 1 Petabyte of storage.
And it's not like they'll have their rushes stored in just one place...

Nothing but respect for the Hobbit guys. I've seen a few crew members burnt out by the sheer effort but the film goes on. Madness.

On set was under control... no drama. It speaks volumes about Peter's team.

Except that he is shooting 3D and at 48fps, so at a ratio of 100:1, the film would be 9 1/4hrs. (Calculation on request) ;)

But what I find more interesting is that if they had developed all that film, it would have cost to the tune of 4.6 million; which incidentally would pay for 50 nicely equipped Epics.

Exactly.. ;)

This is a lot of storage, isn't it?

Trying to do the math now.

20,000,000 feet = 222,222 minutes

222,000 minutes = 3,700 hours

Roughly 1 minute = 5GB average ?

That comes out to 1,100 Terabytes or more than 1 Petabyte of storage.

My first computer had a 40 MB harddisk, twice the normal size that time. The seller said I would never be able to fill that disk.

40MB??? thats 4 times more than the one I had!!!!!! :-P

I think the phenomenal part is that Peter maximizes the budget he has into making something trully unbelievable. Sometimes we hear a certain movie costs above 200 million to make and we just don~t know where the money went. This is also a multi million dollar production but we can see that every single penny is put to good use. I'm expecting a truly amazing experience with the Hobbit. From PJ's production diaries/videos, you can see the amount of work and professionalism in all departments, and when you say army, Jim, no kidding! By watching those production videos I find it overwhelming the amount of people involved in even the smallest details!

This resumes pretty everything on digital...
