2 RED LCDs? And other monitor questions

Hi all, might be getting my RED soon and had some questions from the experts out there. Can I run both a 5in and 7in RED LCD, AND the viewfinder off the camera? I want it for the operator, AC, and director's monitor. Typically I run something lesser quality for the director, but he's been asking for the best quality possible.

If that's not possible, has anyone ever tried running a Panasonic HD monitor (BT-LH80WU for example) off a RED BRICK and an HD-SDI cable? Or some type of alternative?

Lastly, I've been browsing the forums but haven't found a definite answer. Can I run any HDTV (any Bravia, or even as cheap as an off-the-shelf Vizio) off the HDMI port? I saw something the camera locking up in Build 17. This monitor is purely for reference and doesn't need as high color accuracy or sharpness.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I'm excited for my unit coming in and need to make sure I get my investments right.

Bobby

You can only have one RED viewfinder and one RED lcd connected to the camera, not two RED lcd's. If you want to have an extra LCD on the camera you need a HDSDI one, for instance a Panasonic.

I was using Samsung T24 via HDMI with pleasure!

Thanks for your replies. Has anyone had success adapting the RED batteries to any field monitor? I want to avoid investing in another battery system just for it.

Where can we find V-mount plates for the BT-LH series monitors (panasonic). Mine are all Anton and I need to swap to V-mount now with RED and IDX Cam-Wave systems being used.

Build feature, or not possible?

Build feature, or not possible?

This is probably a better question for one of the techs at Red, but I was wondering the following:

Will it EVER be possible to run 2 Red LCD's? Or is it just not physically possible? I would really like this option as it would be great to have the 5.6" and the 7" running off of the camera. These monitors are so light, and I'd prefer that to adding the weight of a panny or other heavy monitor.

Since you can run the LCD and EVF, I would think that it would just be a feature that would need to be enabled. But I'm no techy, so maybe it is not physically / technically possible?

I second that. It would be really nice to have two red lcds.

I just came back from a shoot, and the camera operator wasn't happy with the EVF.
I read a lot of thread telling how good it was, so I looked at my operator with suspicion, but... Our evf (rented) had indeed a very unpleasant flickering, and it became a real pain to work with it. I still think we made something wrong, but hey, i've never been a evf guy, I prefer Lcd... And I guess i'm not the only one

So lets just talk this through shall we.

The signal for the EVF and the signal for the LCD are two different signals, so no you can't (with the current models) have one LCD using the monitor port and one using the viewfinder port.

Well what if we split the lemo monitor signal? I am glad you asked. First off the monitor signal is more than just video. It is also control feed back (those buttons) and very importantly power. Splitting the cable would more than likely under power the LCD's and create unstable video quality.

So, what are the options? Get a 3rd party LCD and rig it. I know, it's big and bulky but thats just how it is.

Berenger, the flicker in the EFV is more than likely due to the EVF display settings. The EVF will refresh it's image in one of two ways:

Synced (what you saw)
This is a synced refresh to your shooting frame rate. I can assume you were shooting 24p (23.98 or such). With this setting the monitor will have a noticeable flicker. Film cats are used to it, but many video operators hate it. For them there is the other option.

Fixed

This will do a pull down to the image to display it in a smooth 59.94. The EFV will no longer flicker, however you will notice pull down motion judder.

Different strokes for different folks.

I am sure the dual LCD option will be a feature on the new DSMC cameras, or some of them as it were.

Thanks for the response. I understand that they are two different signals, which is why it doesn't currently work with 2 LCD's but as they use the same cabling, and the LCD feed is a lower res then the EVF- could the camera be programed to send an LCD acceptable feed to the EVF port? If so, that is an option I'd like to see in a future build.

Should make a monitor with on-board scaling to take the EVF output and scale it (in the monitor itself) or even a higher rez. monitor. Or a box between the EVF port and a monitor.

I second the two LCDs idea. That would help a lot.

I'm sure EPIC and Scarlet will have the ability to send the signal to two RED LCDs at once. But how about the RED ONE?

Would it be possible in the near future to do something about it? Either make it possible to plug a second LCD into the viewfinder port, or come up with a cable splitter idea (if technically possible) and achieve this...

Any thoughts?
