Hi All!
I'll try to keep this short. will use only for Music Videos. Lots of handheld and carrying around in my bag during shoots. I don't think I will need all of the inputs for the i/o as when I use the BMCC I really just needed scratch for audio sync.

I have the i/o package on pre-order, but my main problem with base i/o package is ergonomics. I don't like how the v-mount will sit so high and I also won't use the universal handle as this will be put in my bag for quick storage.

These are the two options as of now:

PACKAGE 1:

RR I/O Package $9,950
128GB Mag $850
RED Station $195
2x Hypercore Slim $520
Battery Charger $340
Side Handle ?

Total $11,855

PACKAGE 2:

Red Raven Brain $5,950
Red Touch 4.7” LCD $1,450
Redvolt XL Module $1,150
Redvolt XL (2 Pack) $675
2x 128GB Mag $1,700
RED Station $195
Side Handle ?

Total $11,120

I'm thinking if I miss the i/o features I can buy the base expander later.

As I am new to RED I was wondering if this seems like a good idea to go with package 2 or am I missing something?

Thanks guys!

With Package 1, you could also pick up the V-Lock adaptor from Wooden Camera, which also has a lower-sitting configuration, bringing the battery lower. Also keep in mind that the new Hypercore Slim batteries are shorter than the Red Bricks by a half-inch or so.

With Package 2, you'll get a compact form... however, you'll have to charge your batteries with the XL module itself, which ties up your camera (it charges the battery when your camera is off - or you can remove the module and charge batteries....but then you have no power options besides AC) - maybe not a good thing for a shoot day. A charger will add a few hundred to your total.

I love the XL look and form factor, and it would be a no brainer for me to go that route if not for one thing... there's no way to use the Redvolt XL's off the camera like you can a V-Mount (i.e. mount the battery separately when on a gimbal). And there's no power tap from the XL's, so you can't run other accessories from the batteries alone like you can most V-Mounts. And although I hate the way the V-Mount sticks up so high, the Slims help with that a bit and can be used in other ways.

For the RAVEN its really up to you. I chose to go a la carte with the build. Just worked out better for me. It sounds like you just want an ultimate run-n-gun camera. I definitely wouldn't go package 1. However, you are going to have to think about ergonomics plus convenience. In your package 2, I do not see a QuadCharger. If you are going to rely on the module, its 4 hrs per battery. 8 hours total for your batteries. Here's how I would spec it out for you. I'll keep the price pretty similar:

Red RAVEN: $5,950
Red Touch 4.7": $1,450 (keep in mind this does not rotate, though I don't think you care)
Redvolt XL Module: $1,150
Redvolt XL 2 pack: $675
240GB Mini Mag: $1,400 ( I realize you want two to off load, but you get roughly the same storage for $300 less, you can always buy more later)
Red Station: $195
Optional stuff:
Ultimate run-n-gun handle is the outrigger: $550

Total w/o handles: $10,625
Total w/Outrigger: $11,175

Thanks for your help guys. Hey Marco, I think the 240gb card is a better option as I really don't offload until I get home. I could use that for an extra battery. I probably don't need to buy the charger yet as I think three batteries for the day should work.

Hey Kevin, its good to know about the batteries being less versatile. I really like the Revolt XL form factor, but am not sure its worth giving up the i/o and battery versatility.

The outrigger handle does look like a good idea, just have to see what the price of the new side handle will be and if its worth the extra cash.

Thanks again guys!

With the 4.7-inch, you may get around 60-90 minutes of runtime per battery. Likely on the high end. You can always plug the camera in to the wall if needed, but then you lose your portability. For a day, I'd recommend at least 4 batteries. I know people with suitcases of them.

Having revolts as a primary power source is always a bad idea. If they malfunction it's hard to find a spare right away and they are only 60 something W. Go with V-mounts, just get some low profile ones. I would recommend several 150w batteries.

Remember that if you get the XL, you are almost dedicating to stay on the RED platform, with V-mount you can freely change. However, i would get the XL simply because of more storage, REDs eat up memory fast.

The V-Lock certainly has more options for connectivity, and more options for buying.

That said, one other reason I shied away from the Redvolts has been solved. I had looked for ways to mount the Raven on a Ronin, and run the XL battery separately - much like the belt clip available for V-Lock. Such a belt clip doesn't exist for Redvolts however (which seems odd), and made the XL's less attractive. However, Ronin now has a cable/tap that goes directly into the Ronin battery, meaning a super light configuration... no extra batteries needed. I might switch back to XL's because the form factor is so much better than V-Lock, and the built-in charging of the XL module is pretty sweet.

Choices, choices... that's what it comes down to in the Red world. Maddening, yet exhilarating all at the same time.

I love the form factor of Redvolt XL batteries. But as far as functionality, the Base I/O V-mount is a great deal. But then you have the top handle issue because of V-mount batteries sticking out, hopefully slim version V-mounts start to pop up more and more so it's not an issue anymore.

For or those of you contemplating the Redvolt module, what are your plans for inputs and etc.? Base expander seems costly after you've already bought the Redvolt module

out of all the new slim batteries i wonder which are the lowest profile, not including the AB cine line, which i think is too fat for palming a raven, nice on a weapon studio config though

also RED are the best designers out there as far as cameras are concerned, why dont they solve a bunch of problems and just lower the position of the vlock connector? they still have plenty of time too, if jarred reads this im confident he will consider it.

I've been looking into this recently too. Apparently Wooden Camera has a Quick Back plate which allows the V-mount batteries to sit in a lower position on the camera. You can see how they do it on the weapon in this video https://youtu.be/iDeq3cT0HIQ?t=1m25s

But to get the battery to interface directly with the camera you need to purchase a special V-mount plate which they told me is still not available. I think the total weight of the quick back and the v-mount plate should be less than the base i/o mount and definitely a lot cheaper too (if you don't need the i/o ports). Hopefully they release the v-mount plate soon! I wanna decide if i should cancel the i/o module order or not lol.

eh, i do need the i/o ports, im really hoping they redesign the vmount i/o expander, not really interested in attaching battery without it.

I'm pretty sure they won't be redesigning the module. There will be 3rd party options, and slim batteries for the issue, and maybe designing a different top handle. But the outrigger handle will work with it as well as other handle modifications.

The WC Quick back will mount directly to the Raven body without the vmount i/o expander. Just some food for thought.

The option WC offered and the one some of you might want in fact IS a flawed one by design. The reason for that is all that hot air coming right out of the camera and hitting your battery plate, making it even hotter right where the contacts are on the other side.

Alexa Mini has a similar design (hot air coming out of the back of the camera) and Arri offers only a rod mounted V-mount plate to maintain a distance between the camera and the battery.

Redbricks have been here since RED One days and they obviously were not designed for DSMC2 bodies. Just buy some shorter batteries and you'll be ok.

I don't have any Weapon on hand but I bet you over evaluate the air exhaust need by the weapon.
Remember how it was with the Epic and the Red topplate that was even covering it.

Pat

Ps. Arri mini power supply design is a joke.
