I just took a nostalgic look back through my email and found Brent's invite to the first RED day on August 31st, 2007 to pick up our camera. It was something of a cluster f**k day but it didn't matter. I think all of us that day felt we were taking part in cinema history. Nearly 3 years later our camera has been around the world several times over, our company was formed and has since moved twice to bigger locations, we've processed several hundred terabytes of R3D material, and today we are releasing our first Katabatic color grading reel of the work performed over the past 3 years.

While not everything in our reel is RED, a good 90% is. So a big thank you to RED... this is what you have enabled us to do...

Turn yo' speakers up... :)

Hi,

amazing reel and color grading. The compression for the clip is unbelievable- well done!

Nice work Emery...awesome reel! I was suppose to be in a couple of session recently at your shop but I was on another job. I am please to see two of my recent jobs on your reel, I did DeSQUARED shoot in Montana (AD) and cut the BLUGIRL french ad...Tommaso Cardile the director had nothing but great things to say about his experience at Katabatic and the end results speak for themselves so I recommend these folks from 1st hand experience to anyone scouting a color house. I look forward to coming in there in the future. Hope all is well. best

Thanks Haskell. Yes I know you work with Tommaso and we keep missing each other. Glad to hear Tommaso had nice things to say, hes a hard man to please but I really like working with him, very talented. Hopefully you'll make it for the next one and we can meet in person. Checked out your reel as well, really nice work man.

Its an h.264 but compression settings are our secret sauce. It's easy though when you start with great high quality footage.

All grading was done in Assimilates Scratch. Finishing is a combo of the usual suspects. Kona 3, Final Cut, Nuke but we're moving to SMOKE unless there are any surprises at NAB.

Awesome work man, love it, the grades are bold and strong but suit the pieces perfectly!
