Hi all,

I'm about to shoot a short with a RED and some Nikon Primes. I would love to shoot this thing in a 2.40:1 (2.35:1) aspect ratio, but am not certain I can without anamorphic lenses. Can I just crop the thing accordingly? Are there appropriate frame lines in the monitor to frame with?

Thanks in advance.

most movies you see in 2.40 are cropped. much more so than actually shot with anamorphic glass. It's a different look, but you can feel fine cropping.

What camera setting should you use if the final output is intended to be 2.40? We are using non-anamorphic lenses and final delivery will be both film and HD video. I've heard that shooting 4K 2:1 is the best for this.

Since you are cropping the output to film to 2.40 and then converting to a 2X anamorphic image, doesn't really matter whether you shoot 2:1 or 16:9 in 4K, it's the same final area being used for 2.40. In 2:1 mode, I think you can go a little higher in terms of overcranking.

HD mastering is always 16:9, whether or not the image has a 2.40 letterbox in it. So if you shoot in 2:1 mode, you'd have to crop the sides slightly to make any full-frame (unletterboxed) 16:9 version even if you also make a 2.40 letterboxed version -- whereas if you shot in 16:9 mode and IF you kept the full 4K 16:9 area free of unwanted film equipment (mics, dolly tracks, etc.), then you won't have to crop the sides to make the 16:9 full-frame HD version.
