  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey all,

We've spoken about this before and I think Jim mentioned something about this being a possibility, but I thought I'd throw it out there again.

How about a 2.35:1 (or 2.39:1) recording mode (not to be confused with Anamorphic) which is just a full 4K-width frame with the top and bottom cropped (just like 2:1 is now).

Pretty much everything that I shoot will be cropped to this aspect anyway, as will alot of feature projects.. could we squeeze a tiny bit more out of Redcode36 with this amount of slightly less pixels ? Btw.. I'm really not interested in the 'headroom" that 2:1 allows for reframing.. I come from a 'nail it in camera' kind of place.

Man, this would rock me three ways from Sunday.

Keep up the good work Red !!

We have talked about this one... likely in the future.

Hi Seth,
In the meantime you could play about with 1.2:1 ANA in build 15. I recall some
Zeiss anamorphics floating about in Sydney, not sure who has them,
good luck getting anything out of Panavision.
Cheers Mezmo.

Not to push, but I'd love it, too. 4.5k 'scope, 4520x1891(approx.) would be great. And still less data than 4k 16:9. Just adding my vote.

I also vote for sensor width! I would cry if that happened (although I'm not quite sure why).

Would it also allow less skew and higher frame rates potentially?

I can't see why it wouldn't ? After all it's no different than any other 'cropped' mode ? ALA 3K@60fps etc..

I haven't done the math.. but I assume it would allow for higher fps than current 4K ?

I would say I shoot 2.35 50 percent of the time. So if the other benefits of frame rate and skew reduction could be reaped then this mode would be a no brainer in my opinion.

Or most likely you could shoot 2:1 for 2:35 crop for all "normal" shots so you have reframing possibilities later. Then when you get to high speed work or skew inducing scenarios you switch to 2:35 only to reap the faster sensor read/reset times and lower data rate.

I'm sure I'm not the first one to have brought this up.

My Vote as well!!

ONE Custome mode instead of MANY new special modes?

ONE Custome mode instead of MANY new special modes?

Hi All,

what about this approach rather than asking for every single mode you like to have individually:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=10333

I'd wish to have a true customizable mode rather than X predefined modes. How should we end then, with two hundret different modes over the next years, covering everyones specific needs?

Why not have - beside the very common and meaningful modes we have right now - a true custom mode that allows you to do what you and we all desire, meeting everyones specific needs at best.

If then some pretty formats exaggerate from there, well, then these might come back as presets.

Give it a thought, and let the RED team know which approach is desired by all of you. I can speak of my own and a few out there who I have been talking too. I had to say nobody was saying I am wrong with the idea. Let me know if you think I am :)

If I am guilty now, please throw the stones...

Cheers,
Axel

I should add that a true 2.35 to 1 mode is clearly a meaningful mode (we used it on Cold Storage by cropping 2:1...), just to be clear.

The question remains if its 4096 wide, or 4520 wide, or whatever... The answer would be a custom mode IMHO.

Cheers,
Axel
