  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else (I tried searching, but nothing turned up).

Does the non-fixed version of the 2/3" scarlet have a zoom lens to go with it? All I've seen so far are primes.

If not... I might just go with the fixed one.
 
RED has not announced they are making a 2/3" zoom for the Cinema Scarlet. High quality S16 zooms should work great though. B4 zoom lenses should work if someone makes a good adapter.

Canon and Nikon SLR zooms will work as well but will become telephoto because of the 2/3" sensor crop factor.
 
I know they won't be making the fixed's zoom into a stand-alone lens (as it would be impossible) and I may just be thinking of that, but I think Jim has specifically said that they do not plan to make a 2/3" zoom.

Doesn't make much sense to me though. I kinda think they might change their minds.

Very roughly, a quality Super-16 zoom can run $15,000-$20,000 can weigh several pounds, and be nearly a foot long. A good B4 zoom can be quite similar. Even a rough used B4 can run around $5,000.

If price is an issue, the most affordable zoom option for a Scarlet Cinema just might be... a Scarlet 8x fixed brain! If the lens performs as well as hoped, the fixed 8x zoom is really a spectacular bargain.

New Canon 6.6-66 S16 zoom is around $18k.
You can get good used 16mm zooms from a reputable dealer with a warranty starting around $800 with the better ones generally falling in the $1500 to $8000 range.

Fact is you could buy the Scarlet cinema, a full set of mini-primes, and a fixed zoom brain to go with the set for less than the price of really good aftermarket zooms suitable for the camera. Think of the fixed as a state of the art fly-by-wire zoom lens with a free brain attached.

I have bought about $3k worth of used 16mm lenses off Ebay so far, mostly zooms of one kind or another. Servicing and mount conversions for the better ones I expect will run another $3k or so. These are all strictly manual lenses.

I think you need to define 'good', used 16mm Zooms I consider acceptable will cost $4000 +, but don't expect anything like 3K resolution especially wide open. Even when new, those lenses varied quite a bit lens to lens.

Not true. Even the classic Angenieux 12-120 in good well maintained condition can produce very sharp images, especially the later HEC versions. Cinematechnic sold one of these awhile back for $1250 that measured 200lp/mm on a lens projector. Typically good older ones will be more like 120lp/mm, and yes they do go a little soft wide open, but still good enough for very high quality images.
One can also get a perfectly good premium Cooke 9-50mm for between $2 and $3k. There are some decent examples of 2k Red one footage shot with these floating around. That lens resolves better than a Red 1 does at 2k for sure.
Not to say more recent and expensive super16mm models aren't better, especially for color contrast.
I'm looking forward to testing a pretty large assortment of classic 16mm glass to see how well they do perform.
Bang for the buck though, the fixed brain is going to be hard to beat.
 
Well maybe I will just go ahead and get the fixed one. I usually don't like to buy the lower end of stuff, but I keep having to remind myself that low end RED is like skyscraper high for any other company!

Just one more question, and I'm sorry if this is a bit of a dumb one, but how does the focus work on the 8x fixed? I only see one ring on it, and I assume that's for zooming.

The Angenieux 17.5-70mm F2.2 can be found for about $800 and looks pretty fantastic. It may not be as sharp as a $4,000 lens but it will work great for at least 1080.

There are some decent examples of 2k Red one footage shot with these floating around. .

I have always been dissapointed with R1 2K footage regardless of the lens used, I was expecting 3K footage to be way better than that, like R1 3K footage.

This Angenieux breathes quite a bit. Again, obviously not going to compare to a $4,000 lens but it takes some beautiful images for an $800 lens. I've seen great footage from the Cooke 9-50mm that David mentioned, as well. If people are on a tight budget I think they will be happy with the footage from these lenses.

If people are on a tight budget they should get a fixed lens Scarlet, it's lens should be vastly superior the the Argenieux. It's a no brainer IMHO, if the Argeniux was 7-28 or 8-32 I would see it could be useful.
To be quite honest there are no first class zooms for S16, there is nothing in the 'Optimo' class.
 
Don't forget, even the best B4 mount zooms will resolve (at best) about 2K of resolution.
I believe the new Canon Super 16mm lens are the same-they are rehoused B4 mount zooms in cine-style bodies.

There's nothing in the Optimo price class either. But the Canon 8-64 and 11.5-138 are pretty nice lenses.

If they did not breath I would like them more, but they would be much larger & heavier. I would expect the Fixed lens Scarlet to out perform them, time will tell.

thank you Mr David Rasberry for suggestions you have given. even a used good conditioned super 16 mm lenses is also too costly as compared to fixed scarlet. so i am in tight budget too. so i decided to buy fixed scarlet first, when it is relaesed and later slowly i add scarlet cinema sensor, any two primes, remaining later. thank you for all others too for their valued posts on s16 mm lenses.
