  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will the 2/3'' Scarlet have a Hirose connector?

For connecting broadcast lenses.

Unless I am wrong by thinking that the Scarlet 2/3'' is aimed at the ENG broadcast market.

It's a good question, makes sense to me to try to allow use of broadcast lenses and servo zooms. Maybe even autoiris? Even if some optical adaptation is required, it would be nice to have use of those lenses.

If RED is only supporting LEMO connections on their cameras will RED be building adapters to Hirose or will we have to go 3rd party for that?

I haven't seen any hirose connectors for scarlet or epic. Maybe I haven't been looking close enough. I've also seen no solution that would allow you to even mount a broadcast lens on a scarlet or epic. Would be interesting though since a B4 mount lens is made to work with a prism in front of the sensor

Hirose

Hirose

Same solution for this next generation of cameras as for RED ONE.

There is a LEMO to Hirose adaptor cable, connect to AUX / RS232 port on R1 camera body or E&S I/O Module.

Wow I didn't not think about that. I forgot that B4 lenses require a prism in front of the sensor. Hmm..I need to rethink this then. Sorry for wasting everyones time.

And thank you Stuart for responding to my questions. I appreciate it.

Did anybody ever get that working well? Examples?

After the Birger (plugged into RS232) issue - immediately abandoned, I was afraid to plug anything in there.

I think you will find B4 mount adapter options and they will allow the lens to focus an image on the sensor plane but as far as I know, this isn't the same as the image going through a prism. The chromatic aberration reduction, for example, is made to be optimum at a much longer lens back to sensor distance.

I have a B4 mount lens, a decent one too, but I don't plan on trying to hack it onto my scarlet. I plan on just buying a proper lens. I could see how that wouldn't be practical for a bunch of lenses though.

Either way, I think the RED cameras are not best suited for ENG anyways. I know a lot of people disagree with that, but to each their own.

I don't know how the B4 mount for Scarlet will be priced, but the PL to B4 optical adapters are more than $3k. Probably better to get a 16mm or S16mm zoom and fit it with motors. It's going to be interesting to see how the Gunner rig and Red's motors price out. A good B4 servo lens would certainly be a nice option for the 2/3" if it can work reasonably well.
