I know the pricing has been removed until the 30th, but does anybody know the rough price breakdown to shoot with both setups similarly equipped?

I don't know if the Scarlet 2/3 is out of my budget, but would like the flexibility of lense choices...

I know it was $3750 for the Fixed 8X Complete Kit last time it was posted...

Any apples to apples $ comparisons would be appreciated. Cheers!

The "complete kit" that you spoke of is hardly "complete". More like a "bare bones, just to get you started kit".

EDIT: Last we were told....everything can change...expect it! :D

Thanks for the response Pietro, but do you know for sure? Do you work for Red or are you speculating? After reading 2 years of speculative posts as I have on and off about the Scarlet, it seems we are 2 years none the wiser...

It seems the majority of buzz is really centered around the Epic, and very little details on the Scarlet, EXCEPT ...back to the end of the line for non-Red One owners! That has been made clear in several posts...

Delaying Red Scarlet details does make sense from a marketing perspective, because the last thing Red would want is a Scarlet "losing" in a shootout against a Canon consumer camcorder or DSLR based on a generic features/price comparison. I do realize the Epic is better than the Red One and will righfully get great buzz first, but I won't be fooled into thinking the Scarlet will produce equivalent images to the Epic... you just know the old "You get what you pay for" & "compared to what other product" arguements will likely be slung around...

At worst we speculate the Red Scarlet will likely be better than the Canon offerings by a generation or so in the recorded image quality and frame rate department, and since previous Red owners will have a first crack, they'll hopefully push 'em hard so we can see them compared to the Canon offerings in their best environments...

It is funny that since the original Red Scarlet concept announcement, the general concept hit the marketplace in the form of the Sanyo Xacti and then later the Canon Video DSLR beat the Red Scarlet by 2 generations already since the shift in direction,

What is not so funny is why in October 2009 we are both still wondering: what actually comes with these Red Scarlet cameras at what price, and when they'll be available to common folk with a 5K credit card limit...

The thread police...

Is that anything like a Hall Monitor?

Hall moderator: The concept of the Hall monitor has entered into popular culture in the US, and is frequently used as plot device or script elements in children's entertainment. In this context, hall monitors are frequently portrayed as being similar to police officers or security guards, and their requests to see students hall passes are commonly used as allegory to requests for ID by the police. :lipsrsealed:

I have been impressed and learned a lot from these forums, and I'm not reviving the 3K for $3K attempt...

BUT I do think it is a legitimate question after 2 years of Forum hunting that I'm trying to arrive at an answer that is worth clearing the old Visa for by the 30th, in consideration of other alternatives readily available:

Q: for $4-5K what can I do with a Red Scarlet 2/3" (be it fixed or brain) on October 30th?

On October 30th, you can likely know what you can or can't get with that 4k-5k and get some kind of release schedule (amongst other details)...

We dont' know the full details of what will be included in the Oct. 30th announcement. We're so close, so best thing to do is just wait a few more days when we can all make more informed decisions. Speculating until then on pricing is a bit futile.

later,
Jason

Good lord, I think they already already said so. And if you've been hunting the forums for 2 years then you should know that... no one knows. :emote_happyhappy:

I dunno. I just figure it's up to the moderators to determine when a thread is closed.

Any speculation about pricing is ok in my books, as long it stays within the forum guidelines (i.e. not trolling, flaming, spamming, FUD, etc). I think it's very important for somebody interested in the DSMC system (or anybody really) to always have a plan/budget and stick to it, especially when considering that the 2/3" Scarlet will be a 'big-ticket' item for some. Obviously, it's hard to budget for something when you don't know what the exact costs are, but that's why they come to the forum - the guys here usually give pretty good advice regarding these things (assuaging the FUDs, to put it nicely) and their collective knowledge is... second-to-none. I know that assumptions are frowned upon, however, I think it'd be okay to assume that the more money you save up (for Scarlet) the better! OF course, all (hopefully; I'm not sure exactly what we'll be hearing, if anything, about the 2/3" Scarlets, RMPs) will be clear on the 30th.

BTW, any posts containing references to dated Epic and/or Scarlet specs and/or prices will be deleted pretty quickly. I think you can link to the info, but I don't think you can actually show anything in the post itself, even if you put the ol' "Subject to change..." disclaimer on there.

Well I can contribute one thing that is not speculative. I have so far spent around $3k for a decent selection of used 16mm lenses for Scarlet cinema. Range is from a 5mm f1.5 prime to a 12-240mm T4.2-5.6 zoom. By the time I get the lenses I decide to keep serviced and collimated that will likely more than double.

8 or so days away guys...It just seemed strange to start another thread asking "how much" when we are so close to finding out on our own.
thats why I used the thread closed emoticon...it was justified.
I've been waiting to own a fixed for almost 2 years when it was announced, 8 or so more days won't kill me.....sorry if I came across rude, can't wait 'till the 30th !!

Does it really cost that much to service a lens? :emote_22_yikes:

David, I'm sure you know a lot about the technical specs of those lenses and that you're probably one of the more experienced guys around here when it comes to film and film accs, but do you know if you actually like the 'look' of some of those lenses you've acquired? What I mean is, if you shot with them on 16mm film, were you/would you be pleased with the results (assuming framing/composition/lighting were satisfactory)? I ask because I remember being interested in getting a few lenses with pretty good specs (for APS-C) but then I saw some shots using said lenses and the bokeh was... not pretty to my eyes. I know that I should probably test them for myself to be sure, but it was pretty disconcerting to see what seemed like such promising lenses tainted by having such distracting bokeh IMO, even though other shooters seemed to love it.
