I'm trying to figure out a cost comparison of a Fixed 2/3 Scarlet Kit vs. 2/3 Scarlet Interchangeable Kit*(That could be built à la carte based on Nov. 30 Announcement pricelist). Would below modules(in my estimate) be the equivalent camera setup/kit of a Fixed 2/3 Scarlet Kit. Please let me know if I'm missing something or have added a module that isn't in the Fixed Scarlet Kit.

2/3 Scarlet Interchangeable Kit:
2/3 non Fixed Brian = $2750
Lens = 0 (if using existing Canon or Nikon glass)?
Side CF Module = $500
Redmote = $550
2.8 Touchscreen LCD = $800
Red Batt(charger)? = $1000
Electronic Nikon/Canon Mount = $500
Base I/O Module = $1750

Est. Total Starter 2/3 Scarlet Interchangeable Kit cost = $ 7850

If my math(and selection of modules)is correct it will cost me $3100 more to have the interchangeable lens option on a 2/3 Scarlet). Adding the price of a Fixed 2/3 Scarlet Kit of $4750 + $3100(additional funds to build a 2/3 Scarlet with interchangeable lens option) = $7850.

Is this estimate correct? Like to hear your feedback. Feel free to add or remove from my 2/3 Scarlet Interchangeable Kit Estimate to create a more accurate match of a 2/3 Scarlet 8X Fixed vs. 2/3 Scarlet Interchangeable Kit.

Ryanb.

ps:this nov. 30th announcement is really exciting! Thanks Red Team for all the hard work and long hours over the holiday-it's appreciated..!

*There is no 2/3 Scarlet Interchangeable Kit(I just added up modules and built a Kit based on Nov. 30th pricelist attempting to match modules and specs) in order to receive some feedback and confirmation that the specs are the same only difference being that one has a fixed lens and one has interchangeable lens body option. Possibly a more accurate estimate would be if Red offered the same exact lens but mounted on the interchangeable body. Then this might be a more apples to apples comparison-but it would at least give us one more option(I kinda like the idea of having that nice 8X lens on a 2/3 Scarlet interchangeable lens body)! Think of it like a EX1 and the EX3. Basically the same internal electronics but the EX3 has some exterior ergonomics and features at a cost increase. Jump to present day Sony releases the EX1r with additional features(not released with the EX3) but again without the interchangeable lens option which in turn offers a cost savings for their customers who do not need those additional options.

What do you all think...?

Why did you include the i/o module? I don't think that is included in the fixed package.

Your probably right. So how does one get stuff I/O if you buy the Fixed 8X 2/3 Scarlet?

be careful on that lens selection. keep in mind there may be a crop factor with some of those lenses - meaning they will not function like they do on your still camera. i would stay in tune and see how the lenses you already have will work before you make a huge decision based on it.

The lens selection you are ref. to is the canon/nikon in place of Red mini primes right?...I'm sure there will definitely be some crop factor issues but my current nikon/canon lenses would still work since they are offering different mounts right? Red mini primes would be best I'm sure since they are designed specifically for Scarlet!

yeah, that's what i meant. and they would work. however you may find they only work as telephoto lenses. depends. i'd just check into your specific lenses and see how they will convert.

Ya lots of things to consider...but on a good note...there's plenty of time to work it out...

What do you think if Red offered the same 8X fixed lens but removable/interchangeable kinda like an EX1 and EX3 offers the fixed and interchangeable version...

Just a thought...

i think they're already set on track... as you can tell from some of the shots (http://redgrabs.com/8sx.jpg) the fixed lens is just that... fixed. the fixed lens idea came from their desire to compete in the market and offer a fully functioning, out-of-the-box solution, which is why it is a bit unique.

Scarlet I/O

Scarlet I/O

Your probably right. So how does one get stuff I/O if you buy the Fixed 8X 2/3 Scarlet?

if you look at the photos you see on the back/bottom a bunch of connectors including one HDMI .... on the bottom of the front there a two 3.5 jacks for microphones i suppose ....... :violent5:

I started a new thread instead

Thought of a big 35mm lens on this cam is a bit frightening. 400mm becomes 1622mm.... ???? Probably best to get iS. ;-)

Even an 11mm lens, the widest you could possibly get on the consuemr market curently (without going to fisheye products) works out to 42mm as a 35mm equivalent. That's tight.

Of course, a 35mm "normal" lens becomes a 142mm telephoto, which could be handy.

I'm actually thinking right now that for features shooting, the S35 is looking more and more attractive. Look at the pricing of the 2/3 interchangeable with a set of mini-primes(brain and lenses $7750, more if you're going PL or C-mount), versus s35 with canon glass(brain with mount and a canon 24-70 f/2.8l $8800), the other modules are obviously format agnostic and specific to your kit. Obviously that lens kit on the s35 isn't a complete lens outfit, but there are plenty of lenses out there that are wide and have great lowlight performance, and decent breathing characteristics, that will also give the opportunity for much wider glass than the 2/3".

The compromises are that you have to get the redmote pro for the s35 if you're going strictly electronic for focus pulling, but it's looking like there is less pricing difference between the s35 and the 2/3 than we thought. And if you go with the s35 you have very capable stills outfit as well.

Food for thought if you're considering the 2/3 interchangeable, especially if you have an existing collection of good canon or nikon glass.

"2/3 Fixed Scarlet Kit vs. 2/3 Scarlet Interchangeable compared to EX1, EX3, EX1r"

I just started looking at the Sony EX1r. For about $6,300.00 for the camera and another $1,000.00 for accessories, I'm ready to rock! The 2/3 Fixed Scarlet Kit I would have to add way too much money to get where I want to be with the EX1r. I figure the Scarlet cost when done would be around $13,000.00

I only need a camera for doing documentaries so the EX1r with a 1/2" sensor will work fine.

Sorry, RED, but!

What accessories are you buying that you would need 8 grand to buy them to get out and shooting?

BOMB EVF - $3200 Can't use a LCD shooting out in the desert.
Side Handle - $950
Battery Module- - $1250
Module Adaptor - $300
Dual CF Rear Module - $950
4 CF cards - $2,000

$8,650.00 plus the camera at $4,750.00

Total = 13,400.00

I'm going to start with one Scarlet 8X, and see how it goes. If it goes OK, I'll be happy to have a great camera. If it goes very well, I'll get in line for another soon. If it is awesome but buggy, I'll probably wait and let the pros work out the bugs in the S35 and get that.

Things sure do add up quick with the modular concept. It's kinda like you get a break when you buy a camera setup with everyone ready to shoot like a Scarlet 8X fixed. I guess this is why I brought up the EX1/EX3 comparison. I actually own an EX3 and it is certainly capable of creating wonderful images for the money! I'd just enjoy using my nikon glass I already own. Sounds like maybe the Fixed version would be the best bang for the buck or waiting even longer for the s35(mainly because its a bit less than FF-which I'd love but just adds that much more to the budget).

If you don't need the extras new Features in the newly proposed Scarlet line of cameras I think you'll be very happy with the EX1r(I like that they added hdmi too-connect that to an aja i/o, matrox mxo2, intensity, nano some already own and get even more out of it)!

I think the RED cameras are going to be great, but for my needs, I want to get as much for my money as I can. The other thing is, the EX1r is available now.

4 CF cards $1400, less 600
Red EVF $2950, less 250
side cf module, less 500
redmote, less 550
2.8" LCD less 900
total less $2800

your new price, $5.850 plus $4,750 (you could still deduce the TBD battery solution) total $10600
