  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

this is from the 1st day out at the beach testing Komodo.

~Komodo 5k @ 48 fps, 5700k, medium contrast / very soft rolloff. Late afternoon sun.

 
What lens did you use?

I had 2 watch the footage on actual youtube for full screen to actually appreciate. I'm liking what I see so far and waiting for more footage to view. Thanks for this!! Big props!!

Damn compression on YouTube just kills footage, I hate it !!!
The few people who put R3d's on their dropbox had them crashed, . I've got projects going I need it for so I can't risk it.

I'll have more to post in a few days.

Lens used was Sigma 18-35, mostly shot around 2.8ish.

Hi Curtis, i've seen during the Q&A that you liked how it felt handheld, i wonder if you could tell us more about how your rigged it and how you felt shooting the footage ?

So, a few questions to answer;

This was shot at 5k @ 48fps.
Color settings in camera; rec709, IPP2 using medium contrast and very soft roll off.
5700k and NO other color or tint changes, .. just basic settings to see what the camera did.

I did use a variable ND, . SLR magic V-ND and tried to stay around the middle settings, avoided full boat to avoid color shift.
I think there's still some minor shift. (I'll shot another set with proper Tokina IRND )

This was all shot from around 4pm to sunset, .. so nice warm late afternoon sunlight.
The girls drawing w chalk was right around 4 pm but gives a really good idea of what this can do with skintone.
I'm doing more tests but I am totally blown away by the skin tone this camera produces.
I get similar with my Helium but it took some work/tuning to get there.

The backlit shots where to show the dynamic range, how well it held shadow detail and how much noise or lack of noise
there is in the shadows. Also note that with the sun directly into the lens I didn't get any red blobs like we got on DSMC2,
however I didn't try it stopped way down. I'll test that next time.

Hand held, .. I have two big gripes. Location of the record button and no programmable buttons.
It needs a record button on the front lower corner. I typically have focus peaking and an exposure tool on a set of buttons on my Helium, two tools I use all the time,
it would be great if Komodo had the same. But that's really more important if you plan on using this camera hand held.
I see this as more a B cam to my Helium and using it on my Ronin ready to run during productions.
Also as a small "crash" cam or small rigging cam it's going to be great!! Imagine rigging this anywhere on a car etc!!

However, this feels like a Hasselblad C500 in my hands, .. I spent years shooting 6x6 still with a Hassy. Komodo feels very natural to me.
Very small and easy to handle. It doesn't weigh much so shooting steady footage can be a challenge.
I'd say hand held will need some basic rigging, handles etc.
But it's so darn small and light I could carry this anywhere and shoot anything. And yes you CAN use the small screen on top to shoot with.
I was very surprised that I could compose, focus and shoot w the small screen!!!
For the doc guys who wanna be stealth shooters but still get that amazing Red image I'd say this is gonna be a real winner.

At this point I am completely in love with this camera. Do I love it as much as my Helium?, no, Helium has been my soul mate for the last 4 years, .
but Komodo is an entirely new tool the really expands my possibilities as a creative!

I'm pretty darn giddy over this!!!

How would you feel about R3d stills from this footage to download?

I realize footage would be better but I don't have the bandwidth on my dropbox,.

Love to play with some R3D frames. Footage looks really nice for a first effort with a new camera.

.r3ds are very welcome, even if they're stills. :)
 
Well thanks for the extensive answer about how it felt. I am indeed a doc guy and needed your input, just have to figure out how to rig for sound now.
And yeah, any R3D are welcome.

Damn it, that's no good for PAL land. I would have hoped that we could squeeze out at least two more frames in order to get both HDRx and perfect 50 to 25 speed recording.

I sincerely hope that some firmware magic could be made to enable 50 fps at 5K or 25 fps HDRx at 5K.
