  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is it safe to use the monstrous 18mm Red Pro Prime without any support on the MX?

Yup ... it's safe. We do it all the time.

The 300mm RPP is another matter.

Ketch swears that the Epic-M's titanium mount doesn't need a support for the 300mm.

I trust him, but I'm not selling my Duclos support ring anytime soon. :001_smile:
 
oh yeah! i do it all the time. And besides, the 18mm is pretty much the same size as the 25 and 35.

The PL mount can support the Red 300 just fine, but you'll still want the support to take out wobble

On a side note. Is there a screw-on filter you can attach to the Red Primes? I noticed some threads on the end of my 85mm.

Not just the RPP 300mm, but even the beautiful "BEAST" the RPZ 18-85 goes naked on the EPIC M... ;)

The Optitek support has been permanently removed, only leaving the ring because the Top handle is way too cool, and very useful.

just remember... EPICM has the TITANIUM PL MOUNT!!!

Just because something works doesn't make it safe or smart. Using the zoom or the 300 without support unduly stresses both the lens and the camera.
 
We are not talking about been smart... ;)

We are talking about using a lens without support, and I do, when in need and no time to set up, just a quick swap of the lens, and that is it,
no need to change set up configuration to add RODS.

If your set up already has RODS, then of course use it and support your lenses, but IF, and ONLY if using a Titanium PL mount,
then no need to waist valuable time changing set up of the Bridge plate to include RODS.
 
Big zooms without support is something I'll never do... The mount has to be tighten to something, and that little something is an expensive camera...

I thought the Red Universal Quickplate purpose was to swap between different setups easily...
 
Again, Jim himself uses it this way, no support, the Tinanium mount will never get damage by none of the RED lenses, sure don't go an put in a 24-290 on it!!

Yes the new Quick plate Pro release system is meant for exactly been able to swap fast, but if you don't have an other set of stick or a secondary set up,
then it will still take time to set up and either loose the shot or just place the 3000 or even the 18-85 as I showed you on that pic above, and you are shooting in seconds.

Again,

I did not said nor I am suggesting it is safe to do this for an entire shoot, but I will say that it is very safe for the camera mount if it is a TITANIUM mount,
and the lens, for short times, can definitely more then handle the stress, trust me, I know my glass... ;)

On many levels. "I'll just unlock the tilt on this triopd......." CRASH!. Dear people who don't have much experience working with professional cameras, this is how you get fired. Never ever do this kind of thing on any kind of a professional set with any ones gear. I am not calling Ketch unprofessional, I am concerned because there are people who learn things from these forums, and this is a bad practice and should not be considered ok. It's the same as having a picture of a kid playing with a loaded pistol on a gun forum and saying it's ok because the safety is on.

I am a Professional, of that there is no doubt, but thanks for specifying that you are not calling me unprofessional Nick... ;)

Fortunately I don't work for any one, and all the gear use its mine... ;)

Seriously, if people don't read and see how many time I wrote why this is an option wit the new Titanium,
mount when in a rush and don't want or can't have the time for set up for heavier lenses, then they deserve anything that could happen to them.

I know what I am doing... most of the times... ;)

I use the gear to their capability, and use it with caution, all our gear is as new because of it, we NEFVER rent out the gear, only for hire,
I know how and what the gear can do, and most importantly because I am a Professional, I know how to use it,
and no accidental unlocking of the head could make the gear fall heavy on its front.

I guess one must always carefully consider before posting he he, so many which have no clue could in deed take it the wrong way, and then say... "But KETCH does it"

Any way, I'll say this one last time!!

"The new TITANIUM mPL mount on the EPIC is Rock Solid, and can handle this lenses with ease, how you do it and when or were you do it is entirely up to you"

BTW, the AC that leaves the camera set up with lenses and all, on a tripod without been BALANCED, and just locks it,
for some one to just come around and move all the knobs to see what each does till the camera drops,
He/She does not deserve to work on any set.
