  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I know u all probably tire of "impatient" users who dont know what it takes to pull images and examples from prototypes, however, just wondering if there is a general time we can expect to see the results from that test. Im an ious yes but moreso are other non-reduser members that i know who are excited about this. I know with all the arri stuff going on everyone has their attention there, but here's a chance to break stride :)

Well if it's any consolation we're waiting because it's never been done before , like when the first trailbike back flip was attempted , get it right and it's going to be fucking awesome get it wrong and it could be pretty messy ... Now we know they are possible and every one is doing 'em... and I never get tired of seeing it !
I don't even think measuring/testing this type of shit is orthodox so that adds more time . Its like Christmas pudding... takes ages to bake just because you've waited all year for it but is worth it in the end .But then again I don't think any thing of Red is baked !

I can't think of any other analogies but yeah I'm with you man... can't Wait!

hahaha no no it was a solid analogy but yeah I get where you're coming from and that's what I mean when I say it's gotta be frustrating for the RED guys to understand all the in's and out's of what it takes to get something so abstract and unprecedented to a point where it can be represented and presented visually. I don't want to push buttons and I'm not demanding anything really. Just wanting to know if there is an expected time for that test to be presented by

It is working and is a very cool mode. More as soon as we can.

The surprise is how few things need this kind of range. It is adjustable so you can dial in only what you need.

sweet action. thanks again for making these kind of things real. You guys are great

Superb!, we love to dial!

Jim, can you enlighten us about how it works yet? I can handle not seeing the footage for a little bit longer but my brain wants to wrap itself around how it actually works so I can start trying to figure out the best way to utilize this feature.

dynamic range- how much is enough

I think that may be more true for experienced imaging pros, who probably automatically avoid the worst situations, than for others. From my experience today with some casual shots in the backyard, where no matter what angle I tried, almost every frame was half in sun and half in shade, there is room for much more dynamic range (admittedly I was not using a Red camera.)

So does that mean you can see the results of this mode in realtime on the EVF or a monitor?

Er... with false color maybe. Might want/need some more color gradations.

18 stops of -----> : )

We have successfully tested EPIC HDRx to 18 stops of dynamic range in motion. You can use the mode in two ways... Easy HDR (in camera) and HDRx (manipulate in post). It can be used several ways, including the "magic" way... which is very cool. Or there is a "normal" way to deal with motion blur. Since it is very rare to need 18 stops, you can set different HDR settings... like +3 stops, +4 stops, etc.

You are really going to love this. We are working with the Foundry for the HDRx mode. Graeme and the Foundry boys make a powerful combination.
