Hi all.
we attending to purchase the new 18-85mm F2.8 lens, is there any opinion on this lens comparing to other similar lenses PL mount in optical POV did someone made a test on this lens and compare it to lenses like Zeiss, angenieux etc' and can give us an objective opinion.
Thanks, Yaron.

I've only tried the lens in the Red Store in LA, but I'd say it performs very similarly to an Angenieux 17-80 T2.2, which is to say very very well... very little breathing. Focuses very close. Just a bit slower.
I'd like to see a test checking chromatic abberation wide open...
but it seems to me amazing value.

I just heard the price of the Fujinon 18-85 T2.0... $86,000.

My number is up. But I am holding off my final payment until I get the official words from the RED authority on whether this lens has the necessary 32mm image circle for the upcoming Epic 5K format.

It wouldn't make much business sense if the lens doesn't work with the next generation of RED camera that is only 6 months away. When 5K is a reality, people will want it. Clients, directors and DP will embrace it, whether they actually NEED it or not. In the technology world, we always want the newest and greatest. Who doesn't?

On the other hand, we don't know for sure which zoom lens on the market has a published image circle of 32mm (we know which ones don't). So you don't really have a choice if you need a zoom now.

In all fairness, optically and possibly mechanically, I heard/saw good things about this lens. And honestly, at this price, it's a super bargain. From the price performance perspective, we don't really have a choice either.

c'mon Jim thats suggested LIST price, I am sure the retail price is more like
79,000...maybe even 70,000 as b-stock.

quite the bargain

A little disappointing but hey it is T2.. I hope their short T2 zoom (14.5 - 45??) is priced less than the cooke alternative. My guess is it needs to be about 30k US to see a allot of sales.

Jim

Fancy the super fast zoom challenge a T1.8-T2.1 16-40 for about 20k ;-) Try and keep it under 3kg...

I definitely would like to see RED take a crack at the compact, wide zoom. The 18-50 was a nice entry, but at it's price point had several compromises. I'd personally like to see a 14-30 zoom at T2.2 or faster... I'm sure that won't be cheap. There's also a lot of players in this market too. Optimo 15-40, Cooke 15-40, Arri LWZ-1 15.5-45, Optimo DP 16-42, Fujinon 14.5-45. Going forward I think the one to beat would be the Optimo DP 16-42.

If the new Fujinon 18-85 performs as well as the Optimo 17-80 (that's a tall order), it will do fine at that price because it's T2. It won't be a personal ownership type of lens for most, but rental houses will pick them up. It will be a tough one to rent out at first though, I think. Most people want to rent the Optimo because it's an Optimo and for no other reason.

The 18-85 T2.9 RPZ covers full 4K on a RED ONE, about 4.75K on the new S35 Mysterium-X and about 4.5K on the up-coming FF35 Mysterium Monstro sensors. This is as good (or better) than any available cine zoom of this type.

Jim

Sorry to be a bother Jim, but I was curious if you knew how much of the sensor the Red 18-50 T3 covered?

actually, no, they won't discount. they don't discount their big B4 zooms either. and i agree with Evin, this will be a rental house item, to rich for most of us. but fujinon is confident that it will beat the optimo.

their point is that they feel their big 12x B4 lens beats the angenieux 12x B4 lens, so they are confident they can do it. otherwise, they would not be putting all this money into this venture.

it is common knowledge in the HD world that there are no better zooms out there than the big fujinons, arguably better than the zeiss digi-zooms, but film people look down on the name fujinon, they see it as a video only lens. that is probably about to change.

That changed for alot of people already when Fuji started making the lenses for the digital Hasselblads.. they did a pretty good job.

I've alway liked the look of Fujinon glass, It's my second favorite Japanese optics house to Nikon. I have a few 4x5 and 8x10 lenses from Fujinon. Unfortunately there hasn't been much else available for me to shoot with but I'm dying to try these new zooms.

Au contrare Mon Frare, I got my Fuji HD lens for for a few grand off the list.
It was not a 86,000 dollar lens but a good deal non the less.

Not that I can afford a Fuji 18-85mm... but companies like Canon usually set a very high "list price", then actually discount considerably to the dealer who then sets the price to the customer. It's possible the $86,000 list is more like $58,000 to a dealer.
