  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

18-85 T2.9 RED zoom...

Why is the stationary focus mark on the lens way bigger than the foot markings? On every other professional modern cinema lens I've seen they are the same size for maximum precision. Please make them the same size.

Hopefully the marks aren't designed like that to compensate for imprecision. Maybe its one of the trade offs for such an inexpensive lens.

Because Mark had the first 18-85 reservation... and the first public RED ONE... and we like him.

That was the idea... You can all thank Brook for being an ass-hat and lowering this on my priority list.. I think Mark is about to post an arsenal of photos anyways though :)

HAHAHA....ass hat!!!! gotta love that one.

Mark, you know I love you and all man, but I gotta tell you that you've got the Red Rock mattebox on backwards. Swingaways are usually to the right side, not the left. Easy to flip over on this unit.

Okay, so I saw the lens in person already so this is what I noticed. So sue me. ;-)

I got to play with the 18-85 in the Red store today.

By all appearances it is rad as all get-out. Mechanically, I'm not sure anybody could ask for anything more.

My overall impression is that it seems to be the bargain of the century for $9975.

Yeah, I saw that too. Perhaps that unit was set up for a shoot "down under"? Isn't everything backwards there?

(just kidding - no offense to our auspicious Australian Red-using colleagues!)

how about this for lens support

I've often noticed that many rental houses use a euro quick plate, a dovetail and the Arri BASE (some even use the RED bottom plate too). I've often wondered what the need for the euro quick plate was. Is it to aid in sliding the rig better? Another way to put it is... if you have a dovetail that's compatible with the Occonor head why would you need the quickplate?
