  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

18-50mm vs 18-85mm

Depends on your needs. The 18-85 is an overall superior lens with much better mechanics, minimal breathing and more. I've done hand-held -- as in shoulder-mounted with my Cooke 18-100, which weighs a bit more than the RED 18-85. It's not something I recommend. The 18-50 is a very nice compact size and weight. But for its price, it does have some compromises. Still an overall good lens for a PL mount compact zoom in this price range. 18-85's are a bit scarce right now. I've only had my hands on one once (twice if you count the 5 minutes or so looking at the prototype last year at NAB).

Hey Von, if it's weight you're looking to lower then I'll be the first to say go for the 18-50 over the 18-85.

But optically the 18-85 is streets ahead of the 18-50 and mechanically it's no contest at all. What I can do when I have some time is throw both lenses onto the camera and do a side by side comparison wide open at various lengths so you can judge for yourself. I'll post this comparison in my sales thread as well once I do it.

I'll say this much - calibrated distance marking are spot on with this lens and hold focus throughout the range. You can't do that with the 18-50 as there are NO calibrated markings, only rough guides as to what distance you're at.
