  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17 year old director, Music video cinematography

I think for a someone your age this is really good work. I think the compositions and shot design are pretty good.

I would say that the un lighting mentality of a lot of young people now drives me nuts. Watch a ton of B&W movies from back in the day. Lean how to light with fresnels. Lighting lighting lighting.

I learned a long time ago that a great shot, functionally lit, beat the crap out of a lousy shot lit to perfection. *Edit my point is you have the good shot thing down which is more important.

Good work.

Nick

This makes sense. This was literally a no budget project and other than a 40$ building light and a 10$ reflector we had nothing but thank you for your insight.

I really like it. I like the story a lot. And the final surprise.

Technically, as Nick said, lighting is a bit flat. Even with no budget you can use the sun/ambient as your main light, and do good lighting. I also think you could have fixed it a bit more in post with a better color correction.

From a directing perspective, I think sometime the acting was weak, while others it was stronger. The guy is a better actor than the two girls. But why doesn't he do anything while the strangling happens? Main character acting is a bit "forced" right when she walks in the house, but afterwards it picks up and she does a good job. Second girl is not doing much.

My suggestion is to observe reality around you, for how people actually behave, move, exists. Actors should feel like that.

Said all the above, congrats! Really good work. Keep on going.

This is very insightful and I especially like the tip with the observance of my surroundings, I will definitely give that a try. May I ask what your field is that you are working in? I am just curious :)

Hi Jacob:

Nice effort. You've succeeded in making your piece look like a lot of other thing's i've seen. A bit like a band covering a hit song. Hard to do. I agree with some of the other notes and I'd add that because the piece looks like everything else, for your next work let's see what you're about instead of how well you can cover what already exists.

I have not thought about it this way and it is true that we got inspired by the original version. Thank you.

I dont think this looks like everything else. It's got a unique feel to it and you've got a great eye for storytelling. I agree the lighting is flat but you'll learn how to solve that soon enough. Keep an eye on things to make frames more interesting. Avoid flat white walls, shoot into corners or against windows, anything to make your frame more interesting.

The argument lasts too long. We can't understand what they're saying so its a lot of moving mouths that isn't giving the viewer any more information. I would also remove the shot where the guy slowly walks over to the main girl after she chokes out the other girl. It makes no sense. Jump cut right to him fighting her off.

Other than that, you're well on your way. Be careful with lighting. This day and age, everyone wants a 'natural' look to their material and the first thing a lot of film students do is blast hard light everywhere. Soft and subtle will get you hired.

This is very insightful. To you have some preferred resources on lighting?

Cool stuff. Keep following your heart and only take as much advise as you feel makes sense at any given time. I think there are amazing points and things to consider from people offering them up -- it's up to you to always decide who much or how little you will incorporate. You seem very open to criticism and that will do you a lot of good, I definitely wasn't ready for anyone to comment on my work til I was a bit older haha.

Keep making stuff!

Big fat thumbs up to this post.
